21st Century Skills for the New Economy

Instructional materials provide vital information that students will experience, learn, and apply
during a discussion. They can make or break learning experience in that they can either engage
or demotivate learners. Therefore, instructional materials must be carefully planned, selected,
organized , refined, and used in learning for maximum effectiveness.

By focusing on student-centered philosophies, school systems and educators will be able to make
necessary adjustments to develop effective and life transforming teaching materials and learning
environments for students.

With a gradual shift towards innovation-intensive activities in the New Economy, there is a need to
rethink existing labor-intensive approaches in order to stay relevant and thereby create meaningful
materials and lessons that students can use and carry even beyond the classroom walls.

What is needed is a set of twenty-first century skills—which can be broadly categorized into
learning and innovation skills, information, media and technology skills, and life and career skills.
These skill sets are defined as follows (Partnership for 21st Century Skills, 2004):

Learning and Innovation Skills

Our learners need to be encouraged to think outside the box and accept that it is okay to fail, and
that there is more to it than memorizing how to solve math problems or repeating someone’s
research. These learning and innovation skills have to be developed and nurtured in them:

> Communication and Collaboration

> Creativity and Innovation

> Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

Information, Media, and Technology Skills

technology as our tool in research, to evaluate and communicate information. Students have to
hone their:

> Information Literacy

> ICT (Information, Communication and Technology)

Life and Career Skills

Nowadays, life and career require far more than thinking skills and content knowledge. We need
the capability to adapt in the complex life and work ecosystem in a globally competitive
environment. It means that our learners need to cope with this advancement and develop
adequate life and career skills which are as follows:

> Flexibility and Adaptability

> Initiative and Self-direction

> Social and cross-cultural Skills

> Productivity and Accountability

> Leadership and Responsibility

Among these three skill sets, learning and innovation skills lay the foundation for the learners to
acquire a set of skills. The specific characteristics of learning and innovation skills are as follows:

Creativity and Innovation Skills

> Exhibiting originality and creativity

> Evolving, implementing and communicating fresh ideas to others

> Being open to suggestions and responsive to a new a various perspectives
