IA3 CHECKLIST

Introduction
☐ 1. Briefly introduce the triathlon event you completed (e.g. distance/duration of the
swim, cycle and run legs, and the overall race context).
☐ 2. Use the task sheet to give a brief outline of what you will cover in this presentation
(Analyse initial performance with reference to energy systems and fitness
components, Devise a personal training strategy with appropriate training types and
principles, Evaluate the devised training strategy, Justify the development,
maintenance or modification of the strategy etc).

Analysis of Performance
☐ 3. Present primary data you have collected about your triathlon performance (fitness
test results, time trial times, race splits, heart rate data) and discuss how this helps
provide areas of strength and weakness. Specifically mention relevant fitness
components and energy systems.
☐ 4. Show video/footage of your triathlon performance to support the data you have
presented.
☐ 5. Include relevant reflections from your training booklet to support your analysis.
☐ 6. Use this data to determine which leg of your triathlon (swim, cycle or run) needs to
improve. Link this to energy systems and fitness components.
☐ 7. Identify the specific movement strategy within that leg that will be the focus of your
training strategy.

Analysis of Target Movement Strategy

☐ 8. Use secondary sources about swimming, cycling, running and/or triathlon to explain
what a high-level performance of your target movement strategy requires. Name
specific muscles and joints.
☐ 9. Use secondary sources to identify the energy systems (e.g. ATP-PC, lactic,

aerobic) required to perform your target movement strategy at a high level.

☐ 10. Use secondary sources to identify the fitness components (e.g. aerobic capacity,
muscular endurance, speed) required to perform your target movement strategy at a
high level.
☐ 11. Compare the high-level demands identified above to your own performance and
fitness levels by referring to your time trial and fitness test data. Compare to
secondary research of performance levels.

Devising a Training Strategy

☐ 12. Introduce your training microcycle.
☐ 13. Use a secondary source to explain what a microcycle is.
☐ 14. Show a screenshot/photo of your microcycle on screen and briefly outline what you
will do in each session.

Justify the Training Strategy

☐ 15. Use secondary sources to justify why you constructed your microcycle in the way
you did.
☐ 16. Identify the fitness components and energy systems you are targeting.
☐ 17. Use secondary sources to justify that the types of training you have selected will
effectively target the identified fitness components and energy systems.
☐ 18. Explain how you have used the training principles of specificity, frequency,
intensity and duration.
☐ 19. Use secondary sources to explain how your use of these training principles will make
your program effective in improving your performance of the target movement
strategy.

Evaluate the Effectiveness of the Training

Strategy
☐ 20. Compare your time trial and first race times/splits to your final race times/splits to
identify if there was any improvement in your performance due to the training
program.

☐ 21. Use the training principles of specificity, frequency, intensity and/or duration to
explain why any improvements may have occurred.
☐ 22. Discuss whether there may have been other factors that might have contributed to
any improvements or lack thereof.
☐ 23. Use the training principles of progressive overload, recovery and
individualisation to explain why a microcycle is not necessarily effective in eliciting
an improvement in performance.

Justify Maintenance and/or Modification of the

Training Strategy
☐ 24. Use secondary sources to explain how you would change and/or extend your
program for future improvement in your triathlon performance.
☐ 25. Refer to secondary sources (e.g. on SPIRE) that support the minimum amount of
time required to elicit an improvement from training.
☐ 26. Consider the impacts of focusing on one movement strategy, when the triathlon race
requires lots of strategies across the three legs.

Conclusion
☐ 27. In one or two sentences, sum up the effectiveness (or otherwise) of your strategy
and how you intend to improve your performance for triathlon in the future.
☐ 28. Reference List – include a list of all secondary sources cited throughout your
presentation. Needs to be APA referenced.

☐ 29. 45-90 seconds of your performing your best performance in movement strategy 1.
No voiceover is required. Give this section a title name of the selected movement
strategy. Can be the same movement strategy as the one discussed in the 11 minute
folio.

strategy. Must be a separate movement strategy.

Tips for IA3 Success

☐ 31. Video/presentation file should play from beginning to end without the viewer needing
to perform any other duties than pressing play.
☐ 32. Check your task adheres to the time limit. Significant penalties apply for failing to
adhere to the 11 minute time limit.
☐ 33. Display quotes and references on screen whenever possible. These will appear in
your reference list at the end of the presentation.
☐ 34. Save your presentation in the file format required by your task sheet (e.g. MP4).
☐ 35. Ensure you have clearly identified yourself in any practical/race footage. You can do
this by using arrows and circles.
