1. If you have problems or you are passing through an unfavourable time, you needn’t worry at all.
When there is a problem, there is definitely a solution too. When somebody is ill, he goes to a

 doctor. The doctor examines him, and after diagnosis prescribes the appropriate medicine which
cures him. The patient, thus, regains lost health. Similarly, solutions exist for problems, provided
you get the right guidance and you follow it in letter and spirit. There is nothing impossible in this
world. If man had thought that walking on the moon was impossible, he would never have made it.
Napoleon used to say that the word ‘impossible’ could only be found in the dictionary of fools.
2. More than talent and knowledge, it is attitude that counts, it is faith that prevails.
3. Suffering is the best teacher. Invaluable are the lessons learnt from bitter experiences. Oscar
Wilde turned over a new leaf in his life while in prison. Earlier, this great author was arrogant, in
prison he learned about humanity and nobility.
4. Adversity turns our thoughts towards God. When we are surrounded by comforts and life flows
like a song, we forget God. But a broken heart pours itself out in prayer. During the darkest days of
World War II, England frequently observed days of national prayers. After they came out victorious,
God and prayers were relegated to the background.
5. When we study the lives of great men like Churchill, Napoleon, Lincoln, Gandhi, Nehru, Subhas
Chandra Bose, J.F. Kennedy and many others, we learn that they were also victims of adversities.
But they braved the difficult times and were ultimately successful in their adventures and missions.
6. If you miss a train, do not curse yourself or feel remorseful. To maintain your peace of mind, accept
the fact with good grace and relax till the next train comes. Always think positively and act positively.
These factors will help you cope with adverse times.
7. There are so many vexations of everyday life. But we need not be nervous. Rather, we should face
such situations bravely and courageously. The secret of success in life is facing and overcoming
hardships.
8. Many yearn to win gold medals in Olympic games. But they do not succeed because they want to
have “good times” without going through “hard times”.
9. Struggle makes the fruit of success sweeter. If nature will allow us to go through life without any
obstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong and competent as we would be otherwise.
Struggle is the jewel of life and has to be cherished.
10. Self-introspection does wonders and shows the correct measures which we can adopt to solve
our problems. Understanding ourselves, our will power, and perseverance help us in overcoming

A.2 CLOSE ENCOUNTER OF THE JUMBO KIND
Coorg is known for its vast population of elephants and other wild animals. Whenever we drive to
places like Mysore and Bangalore, we have to pass through reserve forests, and quite frequently
one encounters wild elephants which sometimes graze near the highway.
Once we were returning to Coorg from Bangalore and it was a little late in the evening by the time
we approached elephant country. We were all a trifle jittery but I kept reassuring my wife and son
that the chances of meeting wild elephants were pretty remote during the post monsoon season.
It was dusk and and we were crossing the forest area; As the dusk deepened through the forest,
I switched on the headlights. We were literally sitting on the edge of our seats!
I negotiated a sharp turn, and just as I came on to the straight stretch that runs through the dense
part of the forest my wife screamed, ‘Stop! Elephant!’ The headlights caught the huge form behind
the slight undergrowth by the side of the road and next to the beast we could see a baby elephant!
We waited for about ten minutes, but the animals made no signs of moving. It was now dark; my
wife and son, both thoroughly terrified, urged me to swing around and head back to Mysore.
I was reluctant. The tedious drive back to Mysore also meant the expense of burning additional
petrol. At this point, we noticed to our horror that the mother elephant was flapping her huge ears!
That settled it. I hastily swivelled the car around and headed back towards Mysore. We were up
bright and early the next day and set out homewards; it was a beautiful sunny morning.
We soon approached the area where we had had our encounter with the elephant and calf the
previous evening. I negotiated the same turn and as I straightened I saw that the behemoths were
still there! I jammed the brakes so hard that the three of us banged our noses against the windscreen.
It took a few seconds for our vision to clear. My six-year-old son was the first to speak. ‘Papa, he
said with a huge grin, ‘do elephants have wheels?’

Symmetry is nature's artwork that creates harmony and balance.
So why not have a symmetry lesson outside, in nature.
Finding symmetrical objects while on a walk or even in your backyard can be an interesting learning
