Year 11 Math worksheet 1
Instruction 1: Work out the following questions by showing all the necessary steps (determine
the type of proportionality – if not stated – then find the proportionality constant and derive the
formula and use your formula to find the required value).
1. A group of 5 workers builds a wall in 10 hours. If 10 workers are available, how long will
it take to build the same wall, assuming output is directly proportional to the number of
workers?
2. The table below shows the relationship between temperature and the number of ice
creams sold on different days. Determine whether the relationship is direct
proportionality, inverse proportionality, or neither, and state the reason for your answer.
Temperature (0c) Ice-cream sales
20 40
28 56
39.2 78.4
54.88 112
3. A factory's output is directly proportional to the number of workers employed. If
employing 15 workers produces 300 units per day, how many units will be produced per
day by 25 workers?
4. A box of sweets is divided among 24 children, and they each get 5 sweets. How many
sweets would each child receive if the number of children is reduced by 6.
5. The volume of gas produced and the mass of the reactants for a specific chemical
reaction is given the table below. Complete the table:
Mass of reactant (in g) Volume of gas (in L)

23.52 313.6
65.856
184.3968 2458.624
6884.1472
6. If a car, traveling at 80 km/h takes 6 hours to complete a fixed distance, how long will it
take to complete that same distance at 100 km/h?
7. The pressure exerted by a gas is inversely proportional to its volume. If the pressure is
120 Pa at a volume of 3 m3, what is the pressure at 5 m3?
8. If 10 workers can complete a project in 18 days, how many workers would be required to
complete the same project in 12 days?
9. The intensity of light is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the
source. If the intensity is 1000 lux at a distance of 2 m, what will the intensity be at a
distance of 5m?
10. If selling 600 products results in $9000 in revenue for a given company, how much
revenue would the company generate by selling 1500 products?
11. A car uses 8 liters of fuel to travel 100 km. Assuming the fuel consumption is directly
proportional to the distance traveled, how much fuel would the car use to travel 350 km?
12. A task requires a fixed amount of work. The time taken to complete it is inversely
proportional to the number of workers. Complete the table:
Number of Workers Time (Days)

5 6
13. A tractor can plow 12 hectares in 8 hours. Assuming the area plowed is directly
proportional to the time spent, how many hectares can the tractor plow in 14 hours?
14. If 270 kg of corn would feed 42 horses for 21 days, for how many days would 360 kg of
corn feed 21 horses?
15. Bonus Question
A satellite's signal strength is directly proportional to the square of its transmission power
and inversely proportional to the cube of the distance from the satellite. If a signal
strength of 400 units is measured when the transmission power is 10 W and the distance
is 2 km, what will the signal strength be if the transmission power is increased to 20 W
and the distance is reduced to 1 km?
