Sample Problem Mech

The document presents various mechanics problems involving beams under different loading conditions, including calculations for maximum flexural and shearing stresses, deflections, and bending moments. It outlines eight distinct situations, each requiring specific engineering analysis and problem-solving techniques. Additionally, motivational quotes are included to encourage students in their engineering studies.

CED 225 MECHANICS OF DEFORMABLE BODIES

SAMPLE PROBLE:

Situation 1: A 8-m beam restrained at both ends carries a load that varies from 3 kN/m at
the left support to 12 kN/m at the right support and a concentrated load of 2 kN at quarter
points. The cross-section of the steel beam has a top flange measuring 250 mm and a
bottom flange measuring 150 mm and having a flange thickness of 50 mm. The total
depth is 300 mm with a web thickness of 50 mm. Determine the (a) maximum flexural
tensile and compressive stresses, (b) maximum shearing stress, and (c) maximum
deflection.

Situation 2: A 6-m beam simply supported beam carries a uniform load of 8 kN/m
throughout the span and a concentrated load of 4 kN at third point and 2 kN/m at midspan.
The cross-section of the steel beam has a top flange measuring 200 mm and a bottom
flange measuring 100 mm and having a flange thickness of 60 mm. The total depth is 250
mm with a web thickness of 50 mm. Determine the (a) maximum flexural tensile and
compressive stresses, (b) maximum shearing stress, and (c) maximum deflection.

Situation 3: An 8-meter propped beam carries a load of 30 kN/m distributed throughout

the span and a concentrated load of 45 kN at the first quarter point and 22 kN at 2 meter
from the right support. The cross-section of the steel beam has a top flange measuring
200 mm and having a flange thickness of 50 mm. The total depth is 250 mm with a web
thickness of 50 mm. Determine the (a) maximum flexural tensile and compressive
stresses, (b) maximum shearing stress, and (c) maximum deflection.

Situation 4: Draw the load and the bending moment diagrams that correspond to the
given shear force diagram. Assume no couples are applied to the beam.

a. Determine the maximum positive moment

b. Determine the maximum negative moment
c. Determine the maximum shear

Situation 5:A truck with axle loads of 40 kN and 60 kN on a wheel base of 5 m rolls
across a 10-m span. Compute the maximum bending moment and the maximum shearing
force.

Situation 6:A truck and trailer combination crossing a 12-m span has axle loads of 10, 20,
and 30 kN separated respectively by distances of 3 and 5 m. Compute the maximum
moment and maximum shear developed in the span.

Situation 7: A crate weighing 30 kN is being lifted by a crane attached to the bed of the
truck. The truck weighs 75 kN and the crane boom weighs 2.5 kN and 6G, respectively,
as shown in the [Link]: a = 2 m, b = 3 m, c = 2.2 m, d = 2.8 m, θ = 30°.

a. Determine the reaction being exerted on the front axle of the truck.
b. Determine the reaction being exerted on the rear axle of the truck
c. If the truck passes over a 16-m long simply supported bridge, determine the absolute
maximum moment (kN-m) in the bridge.

Situation 8: An 8.0-m long beam is fixed at the left end and supported by a roller at the
right end. The beam carries a uniformly varying load of zero at the right end and 36 kN/m
at the left end.

a. Determine the location (m) of the point of zero shear, measured from the left end of the
beam.
b. Determine the maximum positive bending moment (kN-m) acting on the beam.
c. Determine the location (m) of the maximum deflection, measured from the left end of
the beam.
