CLASS 5 SCIENCE NOTES

Topic: Plants and Their Importance

1. What are Plants?

Plants are living organisms that usually grow in soil and make their own food using
sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide. Trees, grasses, flowers, and vegetables are examples of
plants.

2. Parts of a Plant
The main parts of a plant are roots, stem, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds. Roots hold the
plant firmly and absorb water. The stem supports the plant and carries water and nutrients.
Leaves help the plant make food.

3. How Plants Make Food

Green leaves contain a substance called chlorophyll. With the help of sunlight, leaves use
water and carbon dioxide to prepare food. This process is called photosynthesis.

4. Importance of Plants
Plants provide oxygen, food, wood, medicines, fibres, and shade. They also provide homes
for many animals and help prevent soil erosion. Plants are important for maintaining a
healthy environment.

5. How We Can Protect Plants

We can protect plants by planting more trees, avoiding unnecessary cutting of trees, saving
water, keeping soil clean, and taking care of gardens. Everyone can help protect nature
through small daily actions.
