How to Write a Short Paragraph
What is a Paragraph?
A paragraph is a group of sentences about one main idea. A good paragraph usually has 4 to 6
sentences.
Structure of a Paragraph
1. Topic Sentence
This is the first sentence.
It introduces the main idea of the paragraph.
Examples:
• My favorite hobby is swimming. I have a best friend at school.
• My hometown is very beautiful.
2. Supporting Sentences
These sentences give more information about the topic. They explain, describe, or give examples.
Ask yourself: What do I do? Why do I like it? Where? When? How?
Example:
My favorite hobby is swimming.
I go swimming every weekend.
I swim at a sports club near my house.
It helps me feel relaxed and healthy.
3. Closing Sentence
This is the last sentence. It finishes the paragraph.
Examples:
• That is why I enjoy it so much. I really love this hobby. It is an important part of my
life.
How to Start Writing
Before you write:
• Think about one topic only. Use simple words.
• Write short and clear sentences. Do not change the topic in the same paragraph.
• Check your work after you finish.

Example:

Important Punctuation Rules
1. Capital Letters
Use a capital letter: At the beginning of every sentence. For names of people.
For cities and countries. For days and months
Examples:
• My name is Ali. I live in Tripoli. Sunday is my favorite day.
2. Full Stop (.)
Use a full stop at the end of a sentence.
Examples:
• I like English. She is my sister.
3. Question Mark (?)
Use a question mark at the end of a question.
Examples:
• What is your name? Where do you live?
4. Comma (,)
Use a comma to:
• Separate items in a list
• Separate steps in order words (First, Next, Finally)
Examples:
• I like apples, oranges, and bananas.
• First, I wake up. Next, I have breakfast.

My Daily Routine
I wake up at 7 o’clock every morning. I brush my teeth and wash my face. Then I have breakfast
with my family. After that, I go to school by bus. I study English, math, and science at school. I
have lunch at 1 o’clock. In the afternoon, I return home and do my homework. In the evening, I
watch TV or read a book. I go to bed at 10 o’clock. I usually have a busy but good day.
Example Paragraph: Future Plans (Present Continuous)
My Plans for Tomorrow
I am waking up early tomorrow at 6 o’clock. I am having breakfast with my family before I leave
home. I am going to school for my English class. After school, I am meeting my friends at the café.
We are studying together for our test. In the evening, I am visiting my grandmother. Later, I am
watching a movie with my brother. I am going to bed early because I am feeling tired. It is going to
be a busy but exciting day.
