Reading
1. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions
below.

Less than a decade ago, most populations of polar bears were

considered healthy, even growing. But climate change is
impacting the population of this Arctic icon. In 2008, the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service listed the polar bear in Alaska as
threatened. It was the first marine mammal listing under the
Endangered Species Act chalked up primarily to climate
change. Without help, polar bears could disappear from U.S.
shores by 2050.

Often referred to as the largest land carnivores in the world,

polar bears are actually marine mammals, and spend much of
their time on Arctic sea ice, often hundreds of miles from land.
Climate change is melting their icy habitat, making it
increasingly difficult to travel, hunt and raise their young. The
sea ice they depend on melts earlier each spring and forms
later each fall.

Oil and gas development also pose a major risk to polar bears.
The threat of oil spills can come not only from oil and gas
development but increasingly from unregulated arctic shipping.
There is still no proven method of cleaning up oil in broken sea-
ice conditions. An oil spill would not only harm polar bears, but
could also deplete their prey and contaminate their habitat.

Q.6 Read the given passage carefully and answer the

given questions.

We know how light is usually produced. It is made by burning

things. We burn wax in a candle, oil in a lamp, and electricity in
an electrical bulb. But these things-candles and bulbs, give out
not only light but also a large amount of heat.
There are some living things which can give out light without
any heat at all. There are a large number of such living things.
Of these, fireflies and glow-worms are known to most of us. The
light given out by these insects is cold because it is not made
by burning anything. If they were they would get burnt up
themselves. These lights are produced by chemical changes in
their bodies.
A French scientist named Dubois found out that the glow-worm
gave out a glow because of a chemical. He called it ‘Luciferin’.
Later he found that Luciferin alone cannot give out light. It must
react with another chemical.
Fill in the blank with the right word/ words.

Q.7 Read the passage carefully and answer the

questions below.

It started 20 years ago. One day, Jane Smith, a busy mom and a
loving wife, went shopping for new clothes. After a few hours of
searching, she came home exhausted and disappointed. In the
mid-80s, few manufacturers made clothes for women over
thirty. “Thousands of women in England have the same
problem, and I will help them,” – thought Mrs. Smith. With very
little money, no connections in the fashion world and a husband
who thought that her idea was crazy, the ambitious (motivated)
woman decided to start up her own business.
Jane designed her first collection of twenty clothing items,
bought suitable material and sewing machines, and hired
experienced tailors. The Smiths’ balcony turned into a
workshop. When the collection was ready, Jane offered it to a
famous chain of stores. To her surprise, they bought the whole
collection at once. When they asked her about the name of her
company, Jane looked at her husband, smiled and said: “Crazy
Mom”. The collection was sold in a very short time – women
liked Jane’s models. In a month, the manager of the chain
ordered more clothes from “Crazy Mom” and Jane had to hire
more people and find a bigger place for the workshop. The next
step was opening her own shop at the central train station in
Manchester.
Now “Crazy Mom” has 50 boutiques all over the world. Mr.
Smith left his job as an engineer and became head of the
company. Their four children also work in the company and,

questions.
The tiny humming bird gets its name from the sound it makes when flappi
its wings.
This colorful bird flaps its wings 50-60 times a second. By rapidly beating i
wings, the
humming bird can remain in the same position, fly backwards and even ris

like a helicopter.

The humming bird feeds on the nectar of flowers and little insects while

Q.9 Read the passage carefully and answer the

questions below

People plant some seeds, but most plants don't rely on people.
Plants rely on animals and wind and water to help scatter their
seeds.
Animals disperse seeds in several ways. First, some plants, like
the burr at left, have barbs or other structures that get tangled
in animal fur or feathers, and are then carried to new sites.
Other plants produce their seeds inside fleshy fruits that then
get eaten be an animal. The fruit is digested by the animal, but
the seeds pass through the digestive tract, and are dropped in
other locations. Some animals bury seeds, like squirrels with
acorns, to save for later, but may not return to get the seed. It
can grow into a new plant.
The kind of seeds which are often wind dispersed are smaller
seeds that have wings or other hair-like or feather-like
structures. Plants that produce windblown seeds, like the
dandelion shown in the video clip below, often produce lots of
seeds to ensure that some of the seeds are blown to areas
where the seeds can germinate.
Many aquatic plants and plants that live near
water have seeds that can float, and are carried by
water. Plants living along streams and rivers have
seeds that float downstream and therefore
become germinate at new sites. The size of the
seed is not a factor in determining whether or not a seed can
float. Some very large seeds, like coconuts, can float. Some
small seeds also float.

THE BEGINNING OF WRITING
It is very likely that the earliest drawings and paintings were charms rather
than works of art. Man drew the picture of a beast with an arrow or spear
stuck in its heart and believed that it would bring him luck when he went out
hunting next, that it would somehow help him to kill the animal when he met
it in the forest. Thus, drawing and painting gave him the chance not only to
use his skills but also to express his fears and hopes.

As man progressed, he wanted his pictures to express his thoughts, hopes, and
fears more clearly. This led to the invention of writing. The early Egyptians
used a form of picture writing, but they must have found that these symbols
took too much time and trouble to make. In time, simpler forms of writing
came into use.

The invention of writing marked a great change in human affairs. Great

thinkers could now write down their thoughts for those who came after them.
Their work was no longer lost when they died; it was handed down to others
who could continue the work. Books became treasure-houses of knowledge
and great thoughts.

Kings and nobles kept a few people at their courts whose only work was to
make copies of famous books. Priests all over the world set apart a few of
their order for the same purpose. But making copies by hand was slow work.
Only a few copies could be made in a lifetime of hard work.

Books or their copies were few and costly. Scholars had to travel hundreds of
kilometres before they could find the book of their choice. It is, therefore, no
wonder that few people could read and write.

than two-years old, she had a high fever which left her deaf
and blind. After that she felt lost. She would hold on to her
mother's skirt to get around. She made up signs with her
hands so she could talk to her family. But this did not work all
the time. As she grew, she became very angry because she
couldn't hear or talk.

The family knew that they had to do something to help her.

They found a teacher named Anne Sullivan for her. This changed Helen's life.
Miss Sullivan taught Helen the signs for the letters of the English alphabet.
Then, she wrote the words on Helen's hand to communicate with her.
One day, Miss Sullivan led Helen to the water pump and pumped water on
her hand. She spelled the letters W-A-T-E-R as the water ran over Helen's
hand. She did this over and over again. Helen understood that the word
"water" meant the water which she felt pouring over her hand. She ran
everywhere asking Miss Sullivan the names of different things and Miss
Sullivan would spell the words on her hand. This opened up a whole new
world for Helen. Soon, she learned to read the Braille script as well.

When Helen went to college, her teacher Miss Sullivan went with her and
tapped the words of the instructors on Helen's hand. Helen wrote her

and Father Wolf and the four cubs. He was very close to Mother Wolf and the

how to listen and observe.

He recognized the rustle in the grass, the breath of the night air; he heard
every note of the owls, every scratch of a bat’s claws, and every splash of little

slept, and ate and went to sleep again. When he felt dirty or hot, he swam in

and swing from branch to branch. Baloo, the old bear taught him the laws of
