The Houthi movement (also called Ansar Allah)

 The Houthi movement is a group based in Yemen


 They are involved in the Yemeni Civil War
 They receive support from Iran, including weapons and training

began in the 1990s in Yemen as a regional political–religious movement. Their rise to power
accelerated during the Yemeni Civil War, when HOUTHIS took control of the capital,
Sana’a, in 2014.

before Red Sea attacks, Yemen was already part of a proxy conflict between Iran and Gulf
states.

The civil war (Yemeni Civil War) was not created by Houthis but triggered by them because
of the issues they were facing.

The civil war began in 2014 when:

 The Houthis took over the capital (Sana’a)


 But this happened in a country already unstable due to:
o Political corruption
o Economic inequality

 The Arab Spring (The Arab Spring was a wave of mass protests, uprisings, and
political movements that spread across the Middle East and North Africa starting
in 2010. It began in Tunisia when a street vendor, Mohamed Bouazizi, set himself
on fire in protest against government corruption and unemployment. Nationwide
protests → government overthrown in Tunisia
 A domino effect across countries like:
o Egypt
o Libya
o Syria
o Yemen

 Tunisia → moved toward democracy


 Egypt → government changed, then returned to military rule
 Libya & Syria → descended into violent conflicts
 Yemen → instability that later contributed to the Yemeni Civil War
