🔂 UNIT 2
ROUTINES, HABITS & FACTS
Present Simple
“What we do again and again becomes who we are.”
📖 GRAMMAR FOCUS
Present Simple
El Present Simple es uno de los tiempos verbales más usados en inglés. Se usa para hablar de rutinas, hábitos,
hechos generales, verdades permanentes y horarios fijos.
1. Affirmative Form
Subject Verb Example
I / You / We / They base form I work in a hospital.
He / She / It base form + -s / -es She works in a hospital.
Ejemplos:
• I live in Buenos Aires.
• You study English every day.
• He plays football on Sundays.
• She works from home.
✍️ SPELLING RULES: THIRD PERSON -S / -ES
Con HE, SHE e IT, el verbo casi siempre necesita una -s o -es al final. Estas son las reglas de ortografía:
Terminación del verbo Regla Ejemplo
La mayoría de los +s play → plays like → likes
verbos
-ch, -sh, -ss, -x, -o + es watch → watches wash → washes miss → misses fix → fixes go →
goes
Consonante + y y → ies study → studies carry → carries
Vocal + y + s (no cambia) play → plays enjoy → enjoys
Verbos irregulares formas have → has do → does
especiales
Nota: HAVE es irregular → he/she/it HAS (no “haves”).
🚫 NEGATIVE, QUESTIONS AND SHORT ANSWERS
Forma Estructura Ejemplo
Negativa (I/you/we/they) subject + DON'T + base verb I don't like coffee.
Negativa (he/she/it) subject + DOESN'T + base verb She doesn't like coffee.
Pregunta (I/you/we/they) DO + subject + base verb + ? Do you like coffee?
Pregunta (he/she/it) DOES + subject + base verb + ? Does she like coffee?
Respuesta corta afirmativa Yes, subject + do/does. Yes, she does.
Respuesta corta negativa No, subject + don't/doesn't. No, she doesn't.
Importante: cuando usamos DOES o DOESN'T, el verbo principal vuelve a su forma base — pierde la -s.
• ✔ Does he work on Saturdays?
• ✘ Does he works on Saturdays?
🗂️ USES OF THE PRESENT SIMPLE
Uso Ejemplo
Rutinas y hábitos I brush my teeth twice a day.
Hechos generales / verdades Water boils at 100°C.
Situaciones permanentes She lives in Madrid.
Horarios y itinerarios fijos The train leaves at 9 a.m.
Gustos, opiniones y estados (verbos de estado) I love this song. / He knows the answer.
Frecuencia con adverbios We often go to the gym.
⏱️ TIME EXPRESSIONS & ADVERB POSITION
El Present Simple suele ir acompañado de expresiones de tiempo y adverbios de frecuencia que ayudan a
identificarlo:
• Adverbios de frecuencia (van ANTES del verbo principal, pero DESPUÉS de BE): always, usually, often,
sometimes, rarely, never.
• Expresiones de tiempo (van normalmente al FINAL de la oración): every day, every week, on Mondays, in
the morning, once a week.
Ejemplos:
• She always arrives early.
• They go to the gym every Monday.
• I'm never late for class.
🧠 STATIVE VERBS
Algunos verbos describen estados, no acciones, y casi nunca se usan en tiempos continuos (-ing). Por eso,
incluso cuando hablamos del presente “ahora mismo”, usamos Present Simple con estos verbos.
• Verbos de pensamiento: know, believe, understand, think (opinión), remember
• Verbos de sentimiento: like, love, hate, want, need, prefer
• Verbos de percepción: see, hear, smell, taste (cuando describen una percepción, no una acción)
• Verbos de posesión: have (posesión), own, belong
Ejemplos:
• ✔ I understand the lesson now.
• ✘ I am understanding the lesson now.
• ✔ She wants a coffee right now.
• ✘ She is wanting a coffee right now.
