Study Notes: Introduction to Information

Technology
Quick Review Guide for Senior High School Students

1. What is Information Technology?

Information Technology (IT) refers to the use of computers, software, networks, and digital
systems to create, store, process, protect, and share information. IT is used in schools,
businesses, hospitals, government offices, entertainment, and many other areas.

2. Basic Components of a Computer System

A computer system has several important components. Hardware refers to the physical
parts of a computer, such as the processor, motherboard, RAM, storage drive, keyboard, and
monitor. Software refers to programs and instructions that tell the hardware what to do.
Users, sometimes called peopleware, are also an essential part of a computer system.

3. Hardware
The CPU or central processing unit performs instructions and calculations. RAM
temporarily stores data that programs are currently using. Storage devices such as SSDs and
hard drives keep files and programs even when the computer is turned off. Input devices
allow users to enter information, while output devices present processed information.

4. Software
System software manages computer hardware and provides a platform for applications.
Operating systems such as Windows, Linux, and macOS are examples. Application software
is designed to help users perform specific tasks, including word processing, photo editing,
web browsing, and communication.

5. Computer Networks
A computer network connects devices so they can communicate and share resources. A
Local Area Network (LAN) usually covers a limited area such as a classroom or building. A
Wide Area Network (WAN) covers a much larger geographic area. The internet is a global
network that connects millions of devices.

6. Cybersecurity
Cybersecurity involves protecting computers, networks, accounts, and information from
unauthorized access and other digital threats. Common practices include using strong
passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication, keeping software updated, avoiding
suspicious links, and regularly backing up important files.

7. Importance of IT in Education
Information technology gives students access to digital libraries, online learning platforms,
educational videos, collaboration tools, and productivity applications. It can make research
and communication faster, but students should also evaluate online information carefully
and use digital resources responsibly.

8. Key Terms to Remember

Hardware – physical computer components.
Software – programs and instructions used by a computer.
CPU – component that executes instructions and processes data.
RAM – temporary working memory used by active programs.
Network – connected devices that communicate and share resources.
Internet – worldwide system of interconnected networks.
Cybersecurity – protection of digital systems and information.
Database – organized collection of information that can be stored and managed.

9. Quick Review Questions

1. What is the difference between hardware and software?
2. What is the main function of the CPU?
3. Why is RAM important when running programs?
4. What is a computer network?
5. What is the difference between a LAN and a WAN?
6. Give three examples of good cybersecurity practices.
7. How can IT support students in their studies?
8. Why should students verify information found online?

10. Summary
Information Technology combines hardware, software, networks, and human knowledge to
manage and communicate information. Understanding basic IT concepts helps students use
digital tools more effectively, solve everyday technical problems, and practice safer and
more responsible technology use.
