WEEK 9
WRITING
DESCRIPTIVE WRITING
DESCRIP TIVE WRITING
• a style of writing that paints a vivid picture in the reader's mind using detailed observations
and descriptions
SENSORY DETAILS
• Descriptive writing relies heavily on sensory details.
• This means describing scenes, objects, people, or experiences using sight, sound, smell,
taste, and touch.
• For instance, instead of saying "the cake was good," say "the cake's rich, chocolate layers
melted in my mouth, topped with a velvety, sweet strawberry cream."
FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
• The use of similes, metaphors, personification, and hyperbole can add depth to your
description.
• For example, "The sun was a golden disc in the sky, showering the valley with a warm,
amber light."
SPECIFICIT Y
• Being specific in your descriptions makes your writing more vivid.
• Instead of general words like 'nice' or 'beautiful,' use specific adjectives and nouns.
• For example, "The ancient oak tree stood tall, its gnarled branches twisting toward the sky
like arthritic fingers."
SHOW, DON’T TELL
• This is a fundamental principle in descriptive writing.
• It means conveying an idea or image through vivid description rather than plainly stating
facts.
• For instance, instead of telling the reader that "John was nervous," show them by writing,
"John's hands trembled and sweat gathered at his brow."
MOOD AND ATMOSPHERE
• Your choice of words can set the mood of the piece.
• Descriptions can create a feeling of happiness, sadness, tension, or serenity.
• For example, a description of a setting with "gloomy skies, barren trees, and an icy wind"
can set a somber or eerie mood.
TIPS
• Limit Use of 'To Be' Verbs: limit your use of the verbs from 'to be': 'is', 'are', 'was', 'were'.
• Set a Word Limit: set a word limit for every paragraph. This can encourage us not to waste
words.

PRACTICE 1
The sandy aisle, strewn with a cascade of
delicate rose petals, glowed in the soft
light of the setting sun, creating a path of
warm, blush hues that led to an altar
adorned with white chiffon and clusters
of fragrant, tropical flowers.
Guests, dressed in light, airy attire, sat on
wooden chairs with pastel cushions, their
faces lit up with joy as the gentle sea
breeze whispered through their hair.
With each word, the sound of the waves
crescendoed softly, as if nature itself was
celebrating the union.
In the background, the horizon painted a
breathtaking canvas of oranges, pinks,
and purples, the perfect masterpiece to
commemorate the beginning of a lifelong
journey together.
