Opening statement: “Always wear your safety gear, so you can work
without any fear.“ Good Afternoon everyone. My name is Alex Gabrielle
Tura, (Shannen Denise Gomez), and (Jhamaikah Sarita). Thank you for
attending our defense. Without any further delay, let me begin.
Disaster Assistant Smart Watch Device
Background of the Study (Alex)
Disaster Assisitant Smart Watch is inspired by SIRI, an intelligent
virtual assistant that offers a faster, easier way to get things done. As we all
know, the Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone countries. It is
located along the boundary of major tectonic plates. Islands are regularly
impacted by disasters, such as floods, typhoons, landslides, earthquakes,
and volcanic eruptions.
This smartwatch has a variety of features but it is specially made for
people with a disability such as, deaf, blind, and people who are unable to
speak. One tap can save a life- a technological innovation that aims to
improve public health and enrich the lives of people with disabilities.
RRL, Article 1 The Amalgamation of smart watch and geographic
information system to identify pot-earyhquake critical rescue area (Alex)
Article 1 serves as a guide in determining whether a smart watch is an
effective tool for performing tasks or if it can provide assistance that can be
used to create a Disaster Assistant Smart Watch. It is relevant to our
research because it employs the smart watch as a precautionary measure.
It can detect a person in need of rescue and enhance the precision of
saving the victim’s life.
RRL, Article 2 (Jham)
Article 2 addresses the many factors and benefits of a smartwatch in
our present day. Smart wearable technologies have a lot of possibilities for
disaster relief. Using survey data obtained from random people in Japan,
they were able to determine how useful and what people thought of a smart
watch during a natural disaster. The survey data received from 647
respondents in Japan were analyzed using structural equation modeling.
The perceived utility of current smart wearable device applications was
found to be a strong predictor of the perceived utility of deploying these
devices for catastrophe applications. Thus, for these devices to become
truly useful in disasters, it is important to understand factors that affect their
acceptance by the public. These findings shed light on the promotion and
development of this fast-growing technology for disaster applications.
Review of related literature, The insight of Disaster Resilience and
preparedness in the Philippines
(Shannen)
Article 3 summarizes the idea of the significant amount of casualties
and remains every time a disaster takes place in the Philippines. Our
technology has advanced in the past few years. A wrist watch or smart
watch could help us save the lives of many people, especially those who
are incapable compared to those who are not suffering from their condition.
This article aims to address the concerning amount of knowledge of the
local disaster resilience in the Philippines who are the ones responsible for
helping the community and the country itself to be prepared to endure and
quickly recover from calamities like earthquakes, floods, and drought.
RRL Summary (Jham)
These articles are associated because they emphasize the aspects
that must be addressed before, during, and after an earthquake. It also
covers the research into building a method for observing post-earthquake
situations after an earthquake occurred. These are all possible using our
tracking feature to help the local rescuers track the location of a potential
victim and a health condition tracker that can grab the rescuers' attention
and get help quickly. According to Harvard University, the Philippines' local
resilience is insufficient to deal with disasters resulting in many casualties,
remains and many are still not found to this day. A study was conducted in
Japan to see what the general public thinks of a smartwatch during a
calamity. The researchers understand the pure panic of people. As a result,
it's critical for researchers to use highly recognizable and basic
characteristics to help people rapidly recognize each button that we applied
on our smartwatch devices.
Methodology (Shannen)
The Researchers are anticipating at least 20-25 participants to
interview for at least 1-3 minutes to get a detailed and elaborate response.
The questions that the researchers are going to focus on are what are the
advantages and disadvantages of the Disaster Assistant smartwatch. We
are going to ask random individuals openly to answer one simple and
in-depth question with follow-ups based on their past answers. By doing
the interviews on the spot, the researchers can get a sincere response from
the respondents so that the researchers can visualize and apply their
answers to the research. The researcher’s aim is to interview the
pedestrian passing the aurora boulevard where the interviewer is going to
conduct the interview for our research because it is where the Person with
a disabilities-friendly pedestrian is located. The plan is to interview at least
10 people with disabilities to make our research clearer by sharing their
own personal experiences with us. This is where we can see their thoughts
and the probabilities of how it can help them and as well as the
disadvantages of the wrist watch that can improve the accuracy in the near
future. The researchers are going to ask for the government’s approval and
funds to help permit and distribute the smartwatch to the locals per city for
free.
Summary (Shannen)
In conclusion, The smartwatch is very functional and easy to read, so
people who are panicking as a result of the disaster will not struggle to use
it in real-time. Our smartwatch is relevant for people with disabilities
because it includes a location tracker, a health tracker, voice commands,
and immediate contacts to assist in case of emergency.
Our study concludes that having a smart watch can help us survive
natural calamities and that new technology can increase our survival rates
over time. Preparation is a fundamental ability that is considered at home,
at work, at school, and in other places. New technology is not always
warmly embraced by the general public, but it is better to try than to risk
disaster. Not only can a smart watch let us monitor locations and voice
commands, but it also provides fantastic functionality for communicating
with emergency hotlines and loved ones.
Demonstration (Alex)
The device sensors require direct skin contact on your wrist to get an
accurate reading. Tighten the wristband until you feel it has a snug fit
around your wrist, but not so tight that it cuts off circulation, then fasten the
pin-and-tuck strap. The wearer can operate the smartwatch through a
touch screen.
The most important information is in the settings. It offers information
about the smart watch. You can see the product description to give people
a brief explanation about the smart watch, step by step procedure to guide
the wearers to understand the product well and maximize its potential,
notification in the form of vibrations and activated voice commands to send
off alert signal to people with hearing and vision disabilities, emergency
assistance to give disabled people a thorough guide and explanation of
what protocols to do during and after a disaster, and the help button to
prevent loss of life in case of emergency situations.
Closing statement:
That’s all. I hope it will enlighten, entertain, and prove worthy of
acceptance. Thank you.
Possible Questions to Answer:
What is the difference between a Disaster Assistant Smart Watch Device
on other regular smart watch?
The difference between the regular Smart Watch like the Apple Watch
is this Disaster Assistant Smart Watch Device is just like a regular watch.
Unlike in the regular smart watch, you can download apps that you like. So
in other words, this Assistance Smart Watch Device is made for emergency
situations that has features focusing on alerting people specially people
with disabilities only during and after a disaster.
How much it will cost?
Former Mayor of Manila, Isko Moreno has distributed free tablets to
help the students take their online classes due to the pandemic. The
researchers can apply the pandemic and earthquake as both calamities
and prioritize the safety of the people which the researchers think is
possible because of the example of the city Mayor, Isko Moreno.
