Nile Insurance in the context of risks affecting supply chain management operations.
The company’s underwriting practices, risk control activities, and claims management
will also be reviewed in detail. In addition, this term paper sheds light on the
importance of insurance as a method used by companies to protect themselves from
financial losses due to risks such as transportation issues, property destruction, theft,
accidents, and other problems.

1. Introduction

Nile Insurance Company S.C. is one of the well-known private insurance companies
in Ethiopia. The company provides insurance products like motor insurance, marine
insurance, engineering insurance, property insurance, and long-term insurance
services. Since its inception, Nile Insurance Company S.C. has made considerable
contributions to the development of the insurance sector in Ethiopia.

One of the leading private insurance firms in Ethiopia is Nile Insurance Company
S.C. This firm provides several types of insurance policies ranging from motor
insurance to marine insurance, engineering insurance, property insurance, and long-
term insurance policies. Since its inception, the company has helped develop the
insurance industry of Ethiopia greatly by offering cover for different types of risks
faced by different individuals.

The main objective of Nile Insurance is to provide good quality insurance services,
satisfy the customers, and promote economic development by effectively managing
different risks. The firm caters to the needs of businesses engaged in manufacturing,

1
logistics, transportation, import/export trade, construction, among other risky
activities.

The modern-day business environment exposes supply chains to various issues such
as delayed deliveries, theft, accidents, natural catastrophes, inflation, cyber risks,
among others. Insurance firms like Nile Insurance can help businesses recover from
such risks. Thus, learning about the risk management activities of Nile Insurance is
important since it can show the way insurance assists in making supply chains
resilient.

2. Risk Identification and Assessment

Risk identification and assessment is one of the key activities carried out by Nile
Insurance. This involves identification and evaluation of risks that might be
experienced by the firm's customers.
Some of the instruments applied in assessing risks include risk registers, inspection of
the sites, questionnaires, interviews, analysis of historic losses, SWOT analysis, and
risk heat maps. The risk registers assist in recording and monitoring different
exposures experienced by the insured parties. The risk heat maps help identify which
risks should be prioritized depending on their likelihood and severity.

For clients whose businesses fall into the category of supply chains, we assess
transport risks, warehouse risks, inventory loss, theft, fire, damages, environmental
risks, financial risks, and operational interruptions. The data collected through the
inspection of the sites and information obtained from the client enables the
underwriters to determine the extent of exposure.

Additionally, the organization focuses on potential risks such as cyber threats,

technological issues, foreign exchange shortages, and others like inflation and
geopolitics. In the evaluation process, Nile Insurance ensures that the risks identified
are appropriately classified for management purposes before they receive coverage.

3. Underwriting Process

Underwriting is an important process that involves making a decision regarding

whether or not a risk should be taken under specific conditions. The organization has
a systematic underwriting process.

The underwriting process starts with submission of insurance proposals by the client.
The information pertinent to the operation of the client, asset position, claims
experience, among others, is gathered. The information gathered is carefully analyzed
by the underwriters to determine the risk level.

Physical inspection in most instances takes place to establish the state of the assets
and the environment within which operations take place. Issues like safety aspects,
security systems, location, operational practice, losses incurred previously, among
others, are taken into consideration.

Several issues like the likelihood of loss, severity of claims, nature of business, among
others, are used to coming up with the premiums. Clients that pose more risk than
others normally must pay higher premiums than other clients.
After assessing the risk, the decision whether to accept, decline, or ensure the business
with particular conditions is made. Upon acceptance of the risk, insurance policy
documents are prepared for issuance to the insured.

4. Risk Control Methods

Various risk control methods employed by Nile Insurance aim at minimizing the
frequency and magnitude of losses. Such measures can either be applied by Nile
Insurance or recommended to clients.

Risk Avoidance involves situations where particular actions expose the firm to
excessive levels of risk. This may include advising firms not to conduct operations in
ways that greatly expose them to accidents.

3
Risk Segregation consists of spreading out assets and operations into many places. It
ensures that one occurrence does not result in total losses. Warehouses, stock storage,
and transportation channels could be spread out to avoid any major loss.

Another measure would be the diversification method where companies ensure that
there are diverse stocks and serve customers in many industries thus reducing
concentration risk.

The loss prevention technique includes safety training for employees, installing
firefighting systems, regular servicing of vehicles, controlling warehouses, and the
use of surveillance cameras, among others.

Additionally, the organization emphasizes clients making contingency arrangements

and having emergency procedures in place to enhance business continuity during any
unforeseen situation.

5. Claims Management Process

Claims management is one of the key activities performed by insurance companies.

Proper claims management enhances client confidence and satisfaction.

At Nile Insurance, the claims management process commences after notification of

the occurrence of the loss event by the insured party. This could be achieved via
communication channels that include branches, customer services, and/or online
means.

The claims management team assesses the policy details for verification and
confirmation of the type of loss. Documents such as police reports, bills, cargo
manifests, photos, transport receipts, and loss assessments are collected.

There is a need for an investigation to find out the cause and extent of the loss.
Sometimes surveyors and loss adjusters are employed to determine the loss and
estimate the amount payable as compensation.

4
After verification, the compensation amount is determined by the company using the
policy terms and deductibles. After getting approval from the management,
compensation is paid to the insured individual or party.

The company remains in constant communication with its clients during the entire
process of claims management. Good claims management ensures customer loyalty
and enhances corporate image.

Findings, Conclusions and Recommendations

Analysis reveals that Nile Insurance has implemented well-defined processes for
identifying risks, underwriting risks, managing risks, and processing claims. The
company utilizes proven risk assessment techniques and focuses on preventive
measures to avoid losses.

However, there are still some challenges faced by the company such as supply chain
problems, inflation, technology and changing customer demands.

The following are some of the recommendations from the findings made:

• Upgrade the company's capabilities in terms of technology by investing in

digital risk assessment and analytics technology systems.
• Develop more robust cyber-risk insurance policies and products.
• Improve customer self-services systems that assist in managing the policies
and filing of claims.
• Work more closely with logistics firms, transporters, and other parties in the
supply chains.
• Conduct regular training for the underwriting staff and claims specialists to
improve their skills in carrying out their duties.
• Carry out more awareness activities among clients to create knowledge of risk
prevention and business continuity plans.

5
Conclusion

Overall, Nile Insurance is important in ensuring that supply chains are resilient in
Ethiopia. The company achieves this through its ability to conduct risk management
and provision of insurance services.
