G-32: GUIDELINES FOR NON- TEACHING CREDIT COURSES (NTCCs)/
SUPERVISED INDEPENDENT LEARNING (SIL)
(Registration, Conduct, Supervision, Progress Monitoring, Assessment & Grading)
1. INTRODUCTION
The academic philosophy of Amity University revolves around student centric learning, which takes
into consideration their varied learning needs and significantly accelerates their retention of both
knowledge and skills. It inspires and gives the chance to the student to operate, manage and monitor
his/her own learning process under the supervision and the guidance of a faculty supervisor, so that
he/she could train himself to be independent and develop oneself to be a good professional.
Non-Teaching Credit Courses (NTCCs) / Supervised Independent Learning (SIL) have proved
to be great tools to achieve the objectives of student centric learning. Following are attributes of Non-
Teaching Credit Courses (NTCCs) / Supervised Independent Learning (SIL):
The courses are conducted either at institution, industry, other research labs or universitiesin
India and abroad.
There are certain phases of every student’s professional development that cannot be effectively taught
in the academic environment. These facets can only be learned through direct, on-the-job experience
working with successful professionals and experts in the field.
The internship program can best be described as an attempt to institutionalize efforts to bridge
the gap between the professional world and the academic institutions. Entire effort in NTCC /
SIL is in terms of extending the program of education and evaluation beyond the classroom/laboratory
of a university or institution.
1Approved by the Academic Council at its 16th meeting held on 14 October 2013 & Executive Council at
its 12th meeting ( Item No 12.27- W ) held on 1st November 2013& again amended vide 13th Executive
Council at its 13th meeting ( Item No 13.21) held on 25th August 2014
2
G-32
The objectives of the NTCCs / SIL are
• The learning process in the NTCC /SIL seeks out and focuses attention on many latent
attributes, which do not surface in the normal classroom situations.
• Research and its importance in experiential learning through NTCC / SIL. These
experiential learning attributes through NTCC include:
– Intellectual ability,
– Professional judgment and decision-making ability,
– Inter-disciplinary approach,
– Skills for data handling,
– Ability in written and oral presentation,
– Sense of responsibility
– Developing professional Skills
– Application of theory, concepts in given industry /practical / field scenario
Ideally the duration of the Industry internship is six to eight weeks. However, in some cases
this period could be extended, but not more than 18 weeks (or as specified by the regulatory
body of the program)
–
Design/Planning Thesis: Shall be governed as per the directives of the Regulatory body
(e.g. CoA, AICTE etc.)
– SIL – Supervised Independent Learning: May be conducted as per the requirements of
the Regulatory body.
4. CREDIT UNITS
a) The credit units of NTCCs / SIL is 3 credits depending upon nature, level and duration of
NTCCs /SIL as given below
b)
For NTCC of 1 credit in category of Lab based/Library based/Projects/Internship, there will be one week of
topic selection and synopsis preparation, 1 WPR for the work and 1 week for report preparation.
ii. Field based / Survey based
Number of hours assigned for one credit of the NTCC during the semester for field work/survey based will be as
per the table below: student have to work for full 15 weeks or beyond till publication of paper from the
NTCC/SIL work.
For NTCC of 1 credit in category of Field based/Survey based, there will be two (2) weeks of topic
selection and synopsis preparation, 2 WPRs for the work and one (1) week for report preparation.
Includes one (1) week of topic selection and synopsis preparation, and one week of report preparation (in
case of up to 3 credit units), and two weeks of report preparation (in case of more than 3 credit units)
d) Faculty guides must ensure the minimum efforts put in by students commensurate with the
prescribed credit units of a course.
4
G-32
- Practical Training/Internship of 24 Credit Units as per the Statutory body guidelines.
- 24 credits x 30 hrs. per credit = 720 hours = 90 days [18weeks x 5days x 8 hours]
f) For other domains for 3 credit units = 3x30 hours = 90 hours minimum
5.1 The student learning outcomes are very critical for every course and are to be aligned with Program
Learning Outcomes (PLOs) to attain specific graduate attributes. Therefore, NTCC/SIL Course
Learning Outcomes (CLOs) must be clearly defined keeping in mind the programme objectives and
course objectives.
5.2 Work carried out under NTCC/SIL should be converted into published paper / book chapter/ patent / copyright.
Work done is to be published in Indexed journal / conference proceedings / edited book. For Engineering, Science

report with higher than this percentage matching must be explained by the student. The details of
copy rights, professional ethics are given in Plagiarism Prevention Policy of the University.
The most important aspect of the courses is the final report. Therefore, the following must be
ensured for producing the quality report.

f) Final semester students of master’s / bachelor’s degree from all domains doing their Major
Project, Dissertation and Industry Training (NTCC / SIL) are required to publish one research
paper as an outcome of the work done and will submit evidence of publication of the paper in
Scopus/SCI indexed conference/journals in Engineering & Technology, Biotechnology and
Science domains and in Scopus/UGC Care indexed journals/ conference in non-technical
domains. Paper should be accepted in journal or accepted, and registered/ presented in
conferences as an eligibility requirement. Student(s) from all above domains who are not able to meet
this criterion can get a maximum B+ grade in that course.
