Quality Control
Chapter 01
What is testing?

❑In general, testing is finding

out how well something works.
❑ Testing is revealing the quality,
performance, or reliability of
something, especially before
putting it into widespread use
or practice.
What is quality?
❑ Quality is the standard of something as measured against other
things of a similar kind.
❑ Quality is the degree of excellence of something.
❑ In manufacturing, a measure of excellence or a state of being free
from defects, deficiencies and significant variations. It is brought
about by strict and consistent commitment to certain standards that
achieve uniformity of a product in order to satisfy specific customer
or user requirements.

❖ ISO 8402-1986 standard defines quality as,

"Quality of a product or service is the totality of features and
characteristics of that product or service that bears its ability to
satisfy stated or implied needs."
What is quality control?

❑Quality control is systematic control

of the variables in the manufacturing
process which affect the excellence
of the end product.
❑Quality control includes techniques
and systems for the achievement of
the required quality in the articles
produced and for the elimination of
substandard goods.
What are the objectives of quality control?

1. To establish the desired quality standards which are acceptable to the customers.
2. To discover flaws or variations in the raw materials and the manufacturing
processes in order to ensure smooth and uninterrupted production.
3. To evaluate the methods and processes of production and suggest further
improvements in their functioning.
4. To study and determine the extent of quality deviation in a product during the
manufacturing process.
5. To analyze in detail the causes responsible for such deviation.
6. To undertake such steps which are helpful in achieving the desired quality of the
product.
