Week 2 Tutorial

Magnetic Circuits, Inductance and Properties

of Magnetic Materials

Q1) Consider a circular magnetic circuit with radius 108 mm which has a 900 turn coil
wrapped round it. A current of 0.8A is passed through the coil. What is the mmf and the
magnetic field strength?
[ℱ = 720 A.t, H = 1061 A/m]

Q2) Two pole pieces have an area of 6 cm2. The gap between them is 10 mm. What mmf
is required to produce a flux in the air gap of 0.45 mWb?
[ℱ = 5968 A.t]

Q3) Consider a circular magnetic circuit of diameter 200 mm. A coil of 600 turns is
wrapped around the core. If a magnetic field strength of 4000 A/m is applied to the core,
what current would we measure in the coil?
[I = 4.1888 A]

Q4) A magnetic circuit is made of mild steel and has a length of 60 mm and a cross-
sectional area of 250 mm2. A coil carrying a current of 0.9 A is wound round the circuit.
This produces a flux of 180 μWb. The relative permeability of the steel is 480. What is the
reluctance of the material and the number of turns in the coil?
[ℛ = 397887.4 A/Wb, N = 80 Turns]

Q5) A magnetic circuit with area 0.5 cm2 is comprised of two materials: the first is 4 cm
long and has relative permeability of 1100, the second is 5 cm long and has relative
permeability of 1200. A coil of 500 turns is wrapped round the circuit and carries a
current of 4 A. What is the flux in the circuit?
[Φ = 0.0016104 Wb]

Q6) A ferromagnetic core with relative permeability of the core is 1000 is shown in
Fig.Q6. The depth of the core is 5 cm. The other dimensions of the core are as shown in
the figure.
(a) Model the magnetic core by an appropriate magnetic circuit.
(b) Find the value of the current that will produce a flux of 0.005 Wb.
(c) With this current, what is the flux density at the top of the core? What is the flux
density at the right side of the core?

Q7) An 800 turn coil carries a current of 1.2 A and has a flux of 8 mWb linking with it.
What is the coil inductance and the emf in the coil when the current drops to zero in 10
ms?
[L = 5.333 H, E = 640 V]

Q8) A 500 turn coil has a current of 2 A which produces a magnetic flux of 400 μWb. What
is the inductance of the coil and the emf induced in the coil if the current reverses in 18
ms?
[L = 0.1H, E = 22.22 V]

Q9) For core with an air gap shown in Fig. Q9:
(a) Write down an expression for the inductance in a magnetic core with an air gap.
Assume that the core has a mean length ℓ c, cross-sectional area Ac and relative
permeability μ R. There are N turns on the winding.
(b) Calculate the inductance.
(c) What effects have we neglected in doing the calculations of part (b)?
(d) If the winding current is I= 1.4 A, what is the core flux density and the inductor
flux linkage?
[(b) L = 26.7 mH (d) B = 0.7790 T, λ = 37.4 mWb]
