Main Objective
At the end of this chapter, trainees will be able to discuss the
linkage between agriculture and nutrition

Learning Objectives
üDiscuss the inter-relationship between agriculture and
nutrition
üExplain the agriculture-nutrition impact pathways
üDiscuss the guiding principles and approaches of NSA

• Ice breaker
• Group Based on your regions

• Brain storm and Map all the relevant components that needs attention
of DAs dealing with PAP communities concerning Pastoral NSA and
Nutrition.

• Identify challenges of PAP communities in regard to nutrition

The inter-relationship between Agriculture and
Nutrition

üThe main role of agriculture is to ensure availability and access to

adequate, safe and nutritious foods for citizens.

üMore 61% of Ethiopian land are in the pastoral areas

ü97% of them are in the low lands of Afar Somali, Oromia and SNNPR.

üSmallholder farms are responsible for about 90 % of the food production

in Ethiopia.

üPoor agricultural production can lead to poor harvest and food insecurity.

6
The inter-relationship b/n Agric and Nutrition
in the PAP contexts …

üImproved production helps to increase

household income for improved food
security in PAP communities.

üIncreased diversified production

helps to improve dietary intake.

üImproved nutritional status is an input

for increased agricultural productivity

7
The inter-relationship b/n Agric and Nutrition…

üPoor nutrition in farmers can lead to reduced productivity, a

decline income and then to food insecurity.

üPoor nutrition also reduces their ability to learn and adopt

new farming practices.

üHealthier and strong farmers are more productive and able to

drive the development of agricultural systems.

agriculture in PAP context

9
The inter-relationship b/n Agric and Nutrition…

üStudies in Ethiopia revealed that there is no significant

difference in the magnitude of under nutrition and micro-
nutrient deficiencies in food insecure & food secured areas.

üWhy?
üWhat is your take home message
from this finding?

10
…cont’d
üThis clearly proves the fact that increased production for food
security is not by itself a guarantee for nutrition security.

üTo ensure the contribution of increased production and food security

for nutrition security, agriculture interventions should
Øincorporate appropriate dietary diversity and
Ønutrition behavior change communication interventions.

Agriculture to Nutrition Impact pathways

Agriculture impacts on nutrition through three major pathways

1. Through food production

2. Through income from agricultural practices

3. Through women empowerment

Agriculture to nutrition impact pathways

and nutrition by Herforth and Harris (2014)

….cont’d
1. Food production
• Household food production is critical to fulfill the diets and nutritional
requirements of individuals

• Production of diverse nutritious foods would help smallholder PAP

communities to have access to diverse diet

• Replacement of the less nutritious food like the white sweat potato
with OFSP, beans with Iron zinc beans would help improved nutrient
intake
….cont’d
2. Income from agricultural
• Framers can engage in income generating activities like
production for markets depending on their area potential.

• The income from agriculture can be used to buy nutritious foods

from markets for house hold members.

• There for it is important that DAs need conduct SBCC to

support HH to purchase and consume nutritious diets
….cont’d
3. Women empowerment
• Women empowerment in this context refers to
• maternal, childcare, and
• improving access to time and labor-saving technologies (TLST).
• Women empowerment regarding maternal and child care practice
improves the time and resource available for maternal and child
care.
• TLST help women to reset and care for their child and themselves
Guiding
Principles to

Nutrition Sensitive
Agriculture

in PAP areas
Guiding Principles……cont’d

Pastoral and Agro-pastoral focused agricultural interventions need to

consider the following principles

1. Incorporate explicit nutrition objectives and indicators into their

design
2. Assess the context at local level, to design appropriate activities to
address the types and causes of malnutrition
3. Target the vulnerable and improve equity
4. Collaborate and coordinate with other sectors

19
Cont’d

5. Maintain or improve the natural resource base

6. Empower women by ensuring access to productive resources, income
opportunities, etc.

7. Facilitate production and consumption of diversified nutrient-dense foods

8. Improve post-harvest handing and food preservation

9. Expand markets and market access

10. Incorporate nutrition promotion and education

Exercise 2.2 On Guiding Principles

See pages 17-19.

How would you apply the NSA guiding principles to

your context

21
Summary

üAgriculture becomes nutrition sensitive when its programs promote

and support household access to adequate, safe, and diverse by
targeting nutritionally vulnerable segments of the PAP community.

üPastoral and Agropastoral farming practices should be designed and

implemented in line with agriculture nutrition impact path ways

üTo ensure better nutritional outcomes, guiding principles of NSA

should be considered during the design and implementation phase of
nutrition programs in PAP areas
