RATIO
• It is the relationship between numbers.
For example, if A = 80 and B = 20.
𝐴 80 4
Then = = , then A:B = 4:1
𝐵 20 1

• Find the ratio of 77 and 35.

Afeef Aslah .T.P 3

RATIO
• If A and B are in the ratio x:y, then we can
write A=xk, B=yk. k is the common multiple.
For example, if A = 80 and B = 20.
Then A = 4 × 20, 𝐵 = 1 × 20

• Then, write for 64 and 24

same for each paper. His marks in these papers are in the
proportion 5:6:7:8:9:10. Overall he scored 60%. In how many
papers he scored less than 60% marks? (UPSC 2021)
a) 2
b) 3
c) 4
d) 5
Afeef Aslah .T.P 25

PYQ
• Let maximum mark = 100 in each paper

• Overall score = 60% of (100×6) = 360

• 5x+6x+7x+8x+9x+10x = 360, 45x = 360, x = 8

• Mark in each subject = 5x = 40, 6x = 48, 7x = 56,

8x = 64, 9x = 72 and 10x = 80
• Out of this 3 scores are less than 60 (60% of 100)

Half of the villagers of a certain village have their own houses.
One fifth of the villagers cultivate paddy. One third of the
villagers are literate. Four fifth of the villagers are under 25
years of age. Which of the following is certainly correct? (UPSC
2021)
a) All villagers who have their own houses are literate
b) Some villagers under 25 years of age are literate
c) Only half of the villagers who cultivate paddy are literate
d) No villager under 25 years of age has his own house.
Afeef Aslah .T.P 27

PYQ
• Let total villagers = V = 100

• Having their own houses = V/2 = 50

• Who cultivate paddy = V/5 = 20

• Literate = 33.33

• Under 25 years of age = 4V/5 = 80

• We know 80 villagers are under 25 years of age a 33.33 are

literate. So minimum 13.33 villagers are literate and under
25 years of age.
• Hence option (B) is correct.

A bottle contains 20 litres of liquid A. 4 litres of Liquid A is
taken out of it and replaced by same quantity of liquid B. Again
4 litres of the mixture is taken out and replaced by same
quantity of liquid B. What is the ratio of quantity of liquid A to
that of liquid B in final mixture? (UPSC 2020)
a) 4:1
b) 5:1
c) 16:9
d) 17:8
Afeef Aslah .T.P 44

PYQ
• After removing 4 L of liquid A and adding same quantity of
liquid B, the mixture has 16 L of A and 4 L of B. Ratio of A:B
is 4:1
• Now in 4 L of mixture it has 4/5× 4 = 16/5 L of A and 1/5×
4 = 4/5 L of B
• Replacing this 4 L by 4 L of B. We get Liquid A = 16 – (16/5)
= 64/5 and Liquid B = 4 – (4/5) + 4 = 36/5
• Ratio A:B = 64/5 : 36/5 = 16:9

PYQ
There are two containers X and Y. X contains 100ml of milk and Y
contains 100ml of water. 20 ml of milk is transferred from X is
transferred to Y. After mixing well, 20ml of this mixture in Y is
transferred back to X. If m denotes the proportion of milk in X and n
denotes the proportion of water in Y, then which of the following is
correct? (UPSC 2022)
a) m=n
b) m>n
c) m<n
d) Cannot be determined.
Afeef Aslah .T.P 50

PYQ
• After transferring 20 ml from x,

• x = 80 ml milk, y = 100 ml water + 20 ml milk

• Ratio of water to milk in container Y – 100:20 or 5:1

• So, 20 ml of Y now contains 5/6× 20 = 100/6 water and 1/6× 20 = 20/6 milk

• After transferring 20ml from Y to X, the amount of water and milk in both

containers is as follows:

• In Y, milk = 20 – (20/6) = 100/6 ml and water = 100 – (100/6) = 500/6 ml

• In X, milk = 80 + (20/6) = 500/6 ml and water = 0 + 100/6 = 100/6 ml

• m = milk in X = 500/6

• n = water in Y = 500/6. Hence m = n
