ASSIGNMENT 2:
Literacy leadership development
Scope of the assignment (Teaching and Learning goal – instructional goal)
By completing this assignment, the student will be able to further develop and utilise their
knowledge as a developing literacy leader. By completing assignment 1, students analysed
literature-based literacy instruction, to complete this assignment, students will have to draw on
a facet of their initial analysis to devise a process for literacy leadership development. Thus,
students will need to apply their knowledge of literacy leadership to complete this assignment.
Description of the assignment: Teacher study group plan (workshop)
The International Literacy Association (ILA) (2015:3) has found that literacy specialists can
have an impact on both learners in the classroom as well as their fellow colleagues. In fact,
the ILA has found evidence that literacy specialists/literacy coaches should assist in designing
and sustaining professional development efforts that could lead to higher reading
achievement this is because specialised literacy professionals have demonstrated impact on
teachers’ beliefs and instructional practices.
In light of the above view, complete the following assignment and arrange the information
logically so that the specified aspects are highlighted.
Instructions:
As a literacy specialist (developing instructional leader) you will develop/create a plan for a
workshop intended for a prospective study group/professional learning community/community
of practice (literacy teachers within your school/work environment). Use/draw on a specific
issue selected from assignment 1 as your focus.
Complete the following:
Prepare, present and report on a 2-hour workshop session for your colleagues in which you
facilitate their understanding and knowledge of a specific issue selected from assignment 1.
A. Part 1 – Prepare:
1. Using the knowledge and skills you have gained from the course, prepare your
workshop. As evidence of your preparation you will need to hand in the
following:
• Complete workshop checklist (evidence of planning, refer to addendum A)
• Workshop material/resources, clearly stipulate the issue to be addressed.
Provide an overview (of the content) of what will be covered in the intended
workshop (be sure to list what will be done and why it should be done; here
you will draw on your research you did for assignment 1, keep it concise!)
• Develop a set of objectives and agenda for the workshop.
• List ideas how you will get fellow colleagues/peers interested and motivated to
join your workshop.
• Provide a list of materials that you will use in your workshop.
B. Part 2 – Present:
2. Present the workshop to a minimum of four colleagues. Apply what you learnt
about facilitation skills and techniques (teaching adults etc.). As evidence of your
presentation you will need to hand in the following:
• Presentation material/resources
• Develop a set of discussion questions to promote discussion for the goals
and materials you have selected.
• Provide all materials you would use for the workshop, including
handouts, Power Point slides, and other materials.
• Develop an evaluation/feedback form that you will distribute to
participants upon completion of the workshop for professional feedback.

C. Part 3 – Reflect and Report:
3. Write a short reflection of the planning process as well as the workshop itself. As
evidence of your reflection you will need to hand out the following:
• Workshop Report (refer to addendum A)
• Complete Participant Evaluation Forms
• Validation from a senior colleagues (HOD/Principal) to validate
project/workshop

3. Assignments should be submitted online within the SUNLearn Learning Management
System. Explicit submission guidelines will be provided on this platform. No hard copies
of assignments will be accepted.

5. Due to the nature of the assignment a word count is not justified, however your
assignment should not exceed 8 pages, think smart, use graphics and infographics too!
