Hexagonal Patterns-Study Notes

The document discusses the hexagonal number sequence and various relations among number sequences, such as the properties of odd numbers and triangular numbers. It also explores patterns in shapes, highlighting how shape sequences relate to number sequences, particularly through stacked squares and triangles. The Koch Snowflake is mentioned as an example of a shape sequence with a specific growth pattern.

Hexagonal Number Sequence

The hexagonal number sequence represents a pattern where dots are arranged in the shape of
a hexagon. The numbers in the sequence start as 1, 6, 15, 28, 45, 66, and so on.

Relations among Number Sequences

1. Sum of successive odd numbers:

Adding consecutive odd numbers always results in a square number.

2. Adding counting numbers up and down

Adding counting numbers up to a number 𝑛 and then back down to 1 always gives 𝑛2 ,
a square number.

3. Adding counting numbers up

Adding counting numbers one after another gives triangular numbers.

4. Adding pairs of consecutive triangular numbers

Adding pairs of consecutive triangular numbers always results in a square number.

Patterns in Shapes

Shape sequences are one important type of shape pattern that mathematician’s study.
Here are a few examples of shape sequences.

Relation to Number Sequences

Shape sequences are often connected to number sequences in interesting and unexpected ways.

1. Stacked squares are formed by adding successive odd numbers, resulting in square
numbers.

2. Stacked triangles are also formed by adding successive odd numbers, resulting in
square numbers.

3. The number of line segments in each new shape in Koch Snowflake is 4 times the
number in the previous shape.
