GEN ED 7 : SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY
SCIENCE
Science is a systematic and organized way of understanding the natural and physical
world. It is based on observation, experimentation, measurement, and logical
reasoning. Rather than relying on opinions or beliefs alone, science uses evidence to
explain how and why things happen.
TECHNOLOGY
Technology is the application of scientific knowledge to create practical solutions for
human needs and problems. It includes not only machines and electronic devices but also
methods, systems, software, and techniques that improve efficiency and quality of life.
SOCIETY
Society is a community of people who share common laws, institutions, customs, values,
and ways of life. Society includes families, schools, governments, businesses, religions,
and other organizations that influence how people live and interact.
Society shapes people's beliefs, behaviors, and priorities, while people also shape society
through their actions and decisions.
SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY (STS)
Science, Technology, and Society (STS) is an interdisciplinary field that examines the dynamic
relationship between scientific knowledge, technological innovation, and human society. It
explores how science and technology shape society and, in turn, how society influences the
development, use, and direction of science and technology. STS draws insights from disciplines
such as sociology, philosophy, history, economics, political science, and ethics to understand
these interactions.
Rather than viewing science and technology as isolated activities, STS recognizes that they are
deeply connected to social, cultural, economic, political, and environmental factors.
Objectives of Science, Technology, and Society
The primary objectives of STS are to:
Understand how scientific discoveries and technological innovations affect society.
Examine how social values, culture, politics, and economics influence scientific research
and technological development.
Analyze the ethical, legal, and environmental implications of science and technology.
Promote responsible innovation and the ethical use of scientific knowledge.
Develop critical thinking and informed decision-making about issues involving science
and technology.
The Relationship Between Science, Technology, and Society
Science, technology, and society are interconnected and continuously influence one another.
1. Science Influences Technology
Scientific research provides the knowledge needed to create new technologies.
Examples:
Discoveries about electricity led to electrical appliances and power systems.
Advances in biology made vaccines and genetic engineering possible.
Research in physics contributed to the development of satellites and smartphones.
2. Technology Advances Science
Technology provides scientists with better tools to conduct research and make discoveries.
Examples:
Powerful telescopes allow astronomers to study distant galaxies.
Electron microscopes reveal structures too small for the naked eye.
Artificial intelligence helps researchers analyze large datasets quickly.
3. Society Influences Science and Technology
The needs, values, priorities, and resources of society shape scientific research and technological
innovation.
Examples:
Governments invest in renewable energy because of environmental concerns.
Public health emergencies increase funding for medical research.
Consumer demand drives the development of faster smartphones and cleaner vehicles.
4. Science and Technology Transform Society
Scientific discoveries and technological innovations change the way people live, work,
communicate, learn, and interact.
Examples:
The internet revolutionized communication and education.
Medical technology has improved healthcare and increased life expectancy.
Automation and artificial intelligence are changing workplaces and creating new
industries.
Importance of Science and Technology in Society
Science and technology play a vital role in improving human life and driving the progress of
society. Below are the major reasons why they are important:
1. Improves Quality of Life
o Science and technology make daily life easier, safer, and more comfortable
through innovations such as smartphones, household appliances, and modern
transportation.
2. Advances Healthcare
o Scientific research has led to vaccines, medicines, medical equipment, and
improved treatments that prevent diseases, save lives, and increase life
expectancy.
3. Enhances Education
o Technology provides access to online learning, digital libraries, educational apps,
and virtual classrooms, making education more accessible and interactive.
4. Promotes Economic Growth
o Technological innovations increase productivity, create new industries, generate
employment opportunities, and support business development.
5. Improves Communication
o The internet, mobile phones, email, and social media allow people to
communicate instantly across the world, supporting personal, educational, and
professional connections.
6. Develops Transportation
o Scientific and technological advancements have produced safer, faster, and more
efficient transportation systems, such as electric vehicles, airplanes, high-speed
trains, and GPS navigation.
7. Supports Agriculture
o Modern farming techniques, improved crop varieties, irrigation systems, and
agricultural machinery increase food production and help ensure food security.
8. Protects the Environment
o Science and technology contribute to environmental conservation through
renewable energy, pollution control, recycling technologies, and climate
monitoring.
9. Strengthens Disaster Preparedness
o Weather forecasting, satellite technology, and early warning systems help predict
natural disasters, allowing communities to prepare and reduce risks.
10. Encourages Innovation and Problem-Solving
o Science develops new knowledge, while technology applies that knowledge to
solve real-world problems in health, education, industry, and everyday life.
11. Supports National Development
o Countries that invest in science and technology often experience improvements in
healthcare, education, infrastructure, industry, and global competitiveness.
12. Promotes Informed Decision-Making
o Scientific evidence helps governments, organizations, and individuals make better
decisions on issues such as public health, environmental protection, and resource
management
