This question paper has four sections: Section A, Section B, Section C and Section D.
Section A
Multiple Choice Questions (1x10= 10 marks)

B. The chair would be exactly the same as before
C. There would be nothing left of the chair
D. A pool of liquid would be left in place of the chair
Q3.. The simple machines are the lever, pulley and inclined plane, along with their most basic
modifications, the wheel and axle, wedge and screw. A complex machine is made up of two or more simple
machines.
Which of the following is an example of a simple machine?
A. a lift
B. a staircase
C. an escalator
D. a bicycle
Q4. Which of these expand the most when heated?
A. Solids B. liquids C. gases D. none of these
Q5. when the fulcrum is closer to the load than to the effort.
A. The load can be lifted with less effort
B. The load can be lifted with more effort.
C. Not make any difference
D. Same effort
Q6. The moon revolves around the earth. This causes
A. day and night to be formed
B. the moon to appear bright throughout the night
C. seasons to occur on the earth
D. the moon’s visible shape to change during the month
Q7. Why is it easier to draw water from a well using a pulley instead of simply pulling a bucket up with a
rope?
A. the pulley helps us change the direction of the force
B. the pulley gives us the energy to pull the water up
C. The water weighs much less when a pulley is used
D. The water is pulled through a shorter distance with a pulley
Q8. The night of July 31st, 2004 was a full moon night in Delhi. Was it also a full moon night in Mumbai and
New York?
A. It was a full moon night in both Mumbai and New York.
B. It was not a full moon night in either Mumbai or New York.
C. It was a full moon night in Mumbai, but not in New York
D. Cannot say- many answers possible
Q9. Dhruv made a calendar of how the moon looked each day in the month of August.
On the 6th of September how will the Moon look? Answer- A

Q10. Farida flashed a torch on a clean object and observed that light passed through it. She then poured
some water on the object and saw that more light passed through it now.
Which of the following could the object be?
Answer-D
Section B
Name the following (Write the answers only) (1x5=5 marks)
A. The energy that comes from the heat within the earth is called. Geothermal
B. Blocking of the light of the sun or moon by the shadow of another heavenly body. eclipse
C. The first Indian to go into space. Rakesh Sharma
D. The building block of matter. Atoms/molecules
E. The process of solid changing to liquid. Melting
Fill in the blanks (Write the answers only) (1x5=5 marks)
A. The surface of the moon is very uneven.
B. The point of support or the pivot point of the rod is known as the fulcrum
C. Renewable energy is often called green energy
D. The mercury in a thermometer expands due to the heat of our body.
E. The increase in the volume of an object on heating is called expansion
Briefly define the following terms (1-2 lines only) (1x2=2 marks)
A. Crust:
The crust is the outermost layer of the Earth. It is the thin, hard layer where we live.
B. Wedge:
A wedge is a simple machine with two sloping sides that meet at a sharp edge. It is used to cut or split
things.
Section C
6. Answer the following questions in 2-3 lines (2x5= 10 marks)
A. What are the geographical features of the Moon besides craters?
Besides craters, the Moon has mountains, valleys, and large flat plains. It also has hills and deep trenches
on its surface. No atmosphere.
B. What is a lever? On what basis are levers classified?
A lever is a simple machine made of a rigid bar that moves around a fixed point called a fulcrum. Levers are
classified into three types based on the position of the fulcrum, load, and effort.
C. Why do you think solids have a fixed shape?
Solids have a fixed shape because their particles are tightly packed and held together by strong forces. The
particles can only vibrate in place and cannot move freely.
D. Which state of matter can be compressed the most among solids, liquids, and gases? Explain your
reasoning.
Gases can be compressed the most. This is because the particles in a gas are far apart and have large
spaces between them.
E. How is energy produced in the Sun?
Energy in the Sun is produced by a process called nuclear fusion. The sun is made up of gases that react
vigorously. These reactions take place at the center and release a large amount of heat and light.
Section D
Answer the following questions in 4 or 5 lines (3x6=18 marks)
Q1. On a camping trip you come across a huge boulder blocking your way. What simple machine will you
use to remove it? Name the parts of the simple machine created by you.
Ans- Place a strong rod under the boulder and use a small stone as the fulcrum (fixed point). The boulder
would be the load, and the force applied by me would be the effort.
Q2. Explain Lunar eclipse with the help of a simple labeled diagram. No coloring required.
Ans-A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon.
The Earth casts its shadow on the Moon, and this makes the Moon look dark. A lunar eclipse can happen
only on a full moon night.
Q3. Explain phases of the moon and draw them neatly.
The phases of the Moon are the different shapes of the Moon that we see from the Earth.
They occur because the Moon revolves around the Earth, and we see different portions of the lighted half
of the Moon.
The Eight Phases of the Moon:
1. New Moon – The Moon is not visible.
2. Waxing Crescent – A small curved part is visible.
3. First Quarter – Half of the Moon is visible.
4. Waxing Gibbous – More than half is visible.
5. Full Moon – The whole Moon is visible.
6. Waning Gibbous – More than half is visible (decreasing).
7. Last Quarter – Half of the Moon is visible again.
8. Waning Crescent – A small curved part is visible (decreasing).
[Link] which Inclined plane will the person find it easiest to move the load
up? Justify.
The person will find it easiest to move the load up the shallow slope.
A steeper slope requires a larger force to push the load because the load
must be lifted more sharply.
A shallow slope spreads the height over a longer distance, so the person can use less force over a longer
distance, making it easier to move the load.
Q5. Observe the picture and answer the following questions.
.
a. What differences do you notice in the shapes of the Moon shown in pictures A, B, C, and D?
The amount of the Moon illuminated changes in each picture.
The shape of the visible part of the Moon varies: full, half, or crescent.
These differences represent the phases of the Moon as it moves around the Earth.
b. Which picture shows the brightest Moon? Which shows the darkest?
Brightest -A
Darkest - B
c. Arrange the pictures in the order you think they would appear during a month. Give a reason for your
order.
Depends on where you start
B-A-C-D
A-C-D-B
D-B-A-C
