Introduction to
computer network
2 Computer Network
Today, almost every computer is connected to a network.
?
The biggest network in the world is the Internet.
?
The Internet has the potential to connect computers wherever they are.
3 Advantages of Network
Communicating: send messages and emails over the network
Sharing: use a network to share files and expensive device like printers
Saving work: save files onto a network storage drives, can use the files on
any computer on the network
Working together: networks help people to work together
4 Types of Network
2 main types of network
1. Local Area Network (LAN) joins computers in a single building. A LAN allows
people in that building to work together. eg/ A school network
2. Wide Area Network (WAN) joins computers that are far apart. An
organization with offices in different cities or countries uses a WAN so the
employees can work together. eg/ Internet
5 Network Connections
Wired Connection
use a cable to plug the computer into the network
A network cable connects a socket in the computer
to an identical socket on the wall of a room.
Wireless (Wi-Fi) Connection
without cable
Networks use a device called a wireless access point
(WAP) to provide a wireless connection.
WAPs are on the wall or on the ceiling.
A place where a wireless connection is available
is called a hotspot.
6 Using a network login
To keep the network safe
Only people who have permission can use
Keep your password safe
to protect your information and your work
never tell anyone your password
change your password regularly
choose a strong password
7 A strong password
difficult for another person to guess
use passphrase method to make a strong password
think a short phrase – 2/3 words with 8-12 characters
1 eg/ Ginger cats
remove the spaces between the words
2 eg/ Gingercats
replace some letters with other characters that look similar
3 eg/ a @, e 3, s $
new strong password
4 eg/ Ging3rc@t$
8 Devices in a network
a powerful computer
Servers
A network uses several servers - each with different job
Print Server to print a picture or a document correctly
File Server to save documents correctly
Email Server to make sure emails reach the right people
9 Devices in a network
Switches and Hubs
Switches like major junctions in a road traffic system
decides which cable the data needs to travel down to reach the
right destination (to send a message)
eg/ email goes to email server
hub is a type of switch
10 Devices in a network
Router
connects a network to the Internet
eg/ school network has a router
Internet connection at home uses a small router
11 How do network devices work together?
12 Where are network devices stored?
Server room
13 Software and Protocols
things needed to make a network work
Software
to make sure the network runs properly
Protocols
to understand all parts of the network each other
the whole network must follow rules to do the jobs in the correct order
