CLASS NOTES: FOOTBALL
Physical Education / Sports
1. Meaning of Football
Football is a team sport played between two teams, normally consisting of eleven players each. The
main objective is to score more goals than the opposing team by legally moving the ball into the
opponent’s goal. Players mainly use their feet, but they may also use other parts of the body except the
hands and arms during normal play. The goalkeeper is the only player who may deliberately handle the
ball within the team’s penalty area, subject to the laws of the game.
2. History of Football
Modern association football developed in England during the nineteenth century. The Football
Association was established in 1863 and helped standardize the rules of the game. Football later spread
to other countries and became one of the most popular sports in the world. The international governing
body, FIFA, was founded in 1904. The FIFA World Cup is the most widely recognized international
football competition.
3. Objectives of the Game
The main objective is to score goals and prevent the opposing team from scoring. Teams try to
maintain possession, create scoring opportunities, defend their goal, and regain possession when they
lose the ball. Successful football requires cooperation, communication, discipline, fitness, technical
skill, and tactical understanding.
4. Players and Positions
A team normally has a goalkeeper and ten outfield players. Common positions include goalkeeper,
centre-back, full-back, defensive midfielder, central midfielder, attacking midfielder, winger, and
striker. The exact positions depend on the team's formation and tactics.
The goalkeeper protects the goal and organizes the defence. Defenders try to prevent opponents from
creating or finishing attacks. Midfielders connect defence and attack, help retain possession, and create
opportunities. Wingers often attack from wide areas, while strikers are usually responsible for creating
and finishing scoring chances.
5. Basic Skills in Football
Passing is the act of moving the ball accurately to a teammate. A good pass should have appropriate
direction, speed, and timing.
Dribbling involves controlling the ball while moving past or away from opponents. Good dribbling
requires close control, balance, changes of speed, and awareness.
Shooting is the action of attempting to score a goal. Players should develop accuracy, power, timing,
and the ability to shoot with different parts of the foot.
Ball control means receiving and keeping the ball under control. Players may use the inside or outside
of the foot, sole, thigh, chest, or head depending on the situation.
Heading involves using the forehead to direct the ball. It may be used for passing, defending, or
attempting to score.
6. Rules of Football
A football match is played between two teams. The team that scores the most goals wins. A goal is
scored when the whole ball crosses the goal line between the goalposts and underneath the crossbar,
provided no offence has been committed.
Players must not deliberately handle the ball with their hands or arms, except the goalkeeper within the
appropriate penalty area. Tackles and physical challenges must be performed fairly. Serious or reckless
fouls can result in disciplinary action.
The referee controls the match and applies the Laws of the Game. Assistant referees help with
decisions such as the ball going out of play and offside situations. In some competitions, video
assistant refereeing is also used.
7. Offside Rule
A player can be penalized for an offside offence if, when the ball is played or touched by a teammate,
the player is in an offside position and then becomes involved in active play. Being in an offside
position by itself is not an offence. A player is generally in an offside position when part of the head,
body, or feet is nearer to the opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent.
There are important exceptions. A player cannot be penalized for receiving the ball directly from a goal
kick, throw-in, or corner kick. The offside rule encourages attacking players to time their runs and
prevents them from simply waiting close to the opponent's goal.
8. Fouls and Misconduct
A foul occurs when a player commits an offence against an opponent in a manner prohibited by the
Laws of the Game. Examples include kicking, tripping, pushing, striking, or making certain unfair
tackles. The referee may award a free kick or penalty kick depending on where and how the offence
occurred.
A yellow card is a caution. A red card means that a player is sent off and cannot continue playing. A
player receiving two yellow cards in the same match is also sent off. Players are expected to show
respect toward opponents, teammates, officials, and spectators.
9. Restarts and Set Pieces
The game can restart in several ways. A kick-off starts each half and restarts play after a goal. A throw-
in is awarded when the whole ball crosses the touchline. A goal kick is awarded when the attacking
team last touches the ball before it crosses the goal line without a goal being scored. A corner kick is
awarded when the defending team last touches the ball before it crosses its own goal line without a
goal being scored.
Free kicks are awarded following certain offences. A penalty kick is awarded when a direct-free-kick
offence is committed by a defending player inside the team's own penalty area, subject to the Laws of
the Game.
10. Football Formation and Tactics
A formation describes how a team organizes its players on the field. Common formations include 4-4-
2, 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, and 3-5-2. Formations can change during a match depending on whether a team is
attacking or defending.
Important tactical concepts include possession, pressing, counter-attacking, width, defensive
organization, and quick transitions. Possession football emphasizes keeping the ball and moving
opponents. Pressing involves attempting to win the ball back quickly after losing it. Counter-attacking
focuses on attacking rapidly after regaining possession.
11. Fitness Requirements
Football requires several components of physical fitness. Endurance allows players to maintain
performance throughout a match. Speed helps players accelerate and reach the ball quickly. Agility
enables rapid changes of direction. Strength helps with physical challenges and powerful movements.
Flexibility can contribute to efficient movement, while balance and coordination are important for
controlling the ball.
Players should warm up before activity and cool down afterward. Proper hydration, nutrition, rest, and
recovery are also important for safe and effective performance.
12. Equipment and Playing Area
Essential football equipment includes a football, goalposts, appropriate sports clothing, football boots,
and shin guards. Players should wear suitable footwear for the playing surface. Shin guards help
protect the lower legs from impacts.
The field has marked boundaries, a halfway line, centre circle, penalty areas, goal areas, penalty marks,
and corner areas. The two goals are positioned at opposite ends of the field. Match officials ensure that
the equipment and playing conditions meet the requirements of the competition.
13. Benefits of Playing Football
Football provides physical, mental, and social benefits. Regular participation can improve
cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance, coordination, balance, speed, and agility. It can also help
people maintain a healthy body weight when combined with a balanced lifestyle.
The sport develops teamwork, communication, leadership, discipline, decision-making, and problem-
solving. Players learn to cooperate under pressure and respect rules. Football can also create
opportunities for friendships, community participation, and personal development.
14. Safety in Football
Safety should be considered during training and competition. Players should warm up properly, use
appropriate equipment, follow the rules, and avoid reckless challenges. Coaches should provide
suitable training environments and pay attention to weather and playing-surface conditions.
When an injury occurs, the player should be assessed appropriately rather than being forced to
continue. Serious injuries should receive professional medical attention. Concussion is particularly
important: a player with suspected concussion should be removed from play and assessed according to
appropriate medical and sporting procedures.
15. Summary
Football is a team sport that combines technical ability, physical fitness, tactical awareness, discipline,
and teamwork. Players need to understand the rules as well as develop skills such as passing, dribbling,
shooting, controlling, and heading. Knowledge of positions, formations, set pieces, fouls, and offside
helps players understand how matches are organized.
Regular football participation can improve physical fitness and develop valuable social and personal
skills. Safe participation requires proper preparation, suitable equipment, respect for the Laws of the
Game, and attention to injury prevention. Football is therefore both a competitive sport and an
effective activity for physical education and personal development.
