Answer key-NLA

[Link] are the functions of the skeleton system?

Ans- The skeletal system gives your body shape, allows movement, makes blood cells, provides protection for
your internal organs and stores minerals. The vertebral column (spine) plays a key role in maintaining an
upright posture, while strong bones in our limbs contribute to balance.

2. Why do we not consider teeth as bones?

Ans-Teeth are not considered bones because they are made of different materials. Teeth have enamel but no
bone marrow, and they can’t heal themselves like bones can. Bones are living cells that grow and repair, while
teeth do not regenerate once damaged.

3. List the various joints with examples of where they are found.

NAME OF THE JOINT WHERE IS IT FOUND The movement

1. PIVOT JOINT Neck Right and left, Upward and downward

2. BALL AND SOCKET Shoulder and hip Can move freely

JOINT
Rotate around

3. HINGE JOINT Elbow and knee Forward and backward

4. GLIDING JOINT Wrist Flat bone moves past each other. A little rotation

4. Why do injuries and open wounds on joints take more time to heal?

Ans- Poor blood circulation can slow down this process, making the wound that much longer to heal. This can
also be due to their frequent use and movement

5. Arrange them in the correct column

Sitting upright on a chair/ Digestion of food/ Beating of heart/ Singing a song/ Pushing of food into the
intestine/ Dancing/ Breathing

Voluntary muscles movement Involuntary muscles movement

Chewing food Digestion of food

Sitting upright Beating of heart
Singing a song Pushing of food into the intestine
dancing breathing

Q6. How do diet and exercise impact bones and muscles? Give examples.

Ans- Diet and exercise help keep bones and muscles strong and healthy:
Diet: Foods rich in calcium (like milk, yogurt) and vitamin D (like eggs, fish) help build strong bones. Protein
(like meat, beans) helps repair and grow muscles.

Exercise: Activities like running, jumping, or lifting weights strengthen bones and increase muscle strength and
flexibility.

Example: A child who drinks milk daily and plays sports like basketball will likely develop stronger bones and
muscles.

7. Name the parts of the brain and write their functions.

Ans- The parts of the brain are the Cerebrum, the Cerebellum and the Medulla.

Their functions are as follows

Cerebrum- controls-eyes, ears, nose and tongue-controls voice- centre of intelligence- think-learn- remember-
recall

Cerebellum- coordinates muscles- balance

Medulla- controls involuntary actions- lungs- heart

8. Is it correct to say that our brain is responsible for every action of our body? Justify your answer.

9. Make a table and differentiate the three types of nerves.

Type of nerve Functions

1. Sensory Nerves Brings messages from sense organs to the brain or spinal
cord
2. Motor Nerves Carry messages from the brain or the spinal cord to the
muscles or glands
3. Mixed Nerves Carry messages to the brain as well as bring orders from the
brain

10. What is a reflex action? Would the absence of reflex actions hamper our everyday lives? Justify with an
example.

Ans- A reflex action is a quick, automatic response to a stimulus that happens without thinking. Yes, it would
hamper our daily life. These reflex actions protect us from danger and keep us safe. It protects our body from
injuries and accidents. Example if we do not immediately withdraw our hand on touching hot or sharp objects
it could lead to a severe burns or cuts.

11. What important materials are transported by your blood to keep you alive?

Ans-Nutrients and oxygen. Carbon dioxide and waste

[Link] board (attempt only one) : HOTS -Open ended

Option 1: Describe how blood flows through our body

Option 2: Write a short diary entry describing your exciting journey through the circulatory system — where
you go, what you carry, and what you see along the way.
Option 3: Create a flowchart that shows your path through the heart, lungs, and body. Include what happens
at each stop on your journey."

13. Why do we sweat more during exercise? (the purpose)

Ans- We sweat more during exercise because our body heats up, and sweating helps cool it down. Sweat
evaporates from the skin, which removes heat from the body and helps maintain a safe body temperature.
This prevents overheating during physical activity.

14. How are the working of the circulatory system and the excretory system dependent on each other?

Ans- The circulatory system and excretory system work together to remove waste from the body:

The circulatory system carries waste products like urea and carbon dioxide from cells to the excretory organs.

The excretory system (mainly kidneys and lungs) filters and removes these wastes from the blood.

4. How are the muscles of your hand different from those of your stomach?

Muscles of our hand is a skeleton muscle which is a voluntary muscle but muscles of our stomach is a smooth
muscle and it is an involuntary muscle.

5.A baby survives many falls as it crawls and eventually learns to stand and later walk. Mention one feature
of its skeletal system that allows the baby to survive.

One feature of a baby's skeletal system that allows them to survive many falls is the presence of soft
