LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN MATHEMATICS 7
USES OF RATES & PROBLEM SOLVING INVOLVING RATES
Name: ____________________________________ Score: ________ / 50
Grade & Section: ___________________________ Date: __________________
I. KEY CONCEPTS & STUDY GUIDE
• Ratio: A comparison of two or more quantities of the SAME kind or unit (e.g., 4 ₱5-coins to 3 ₱10-coins
= 4 : 3).
• Rate: A comparison of two quantities measured in DIFFERENT units (e.g., ₱50 saved in 1 week).
• Unit Rate: A rate in which the second quantity (denominator) is ALWAYS 1 unit (e.g., ₱50 per week, 60
km/h).
• How to Find Unit Rate: Divide the numerator by the denominator. Formula: Unit Rate = Total Amount
÷ Total Units.
• Key Formula (Population Density): Population Density = Total Population ÷ Land Area (in sq. km).
Note: Always round to whole people since fractional people do not exist!
II. ACTIVITY 1: Identification & Unit Rate Conversion (15 Points)
Directions: Identify whether each statement represents a Unit Rate (UR) or Not a Unit Rate (NUR). If it is
NUR, convert it into its correct Unit Rate in the space provided.
# Given Quantity / Scenario UR or NUR? Converted Unit Rate
1 ₱300 for 5 Liters of gasoline NUR ₱60 per Liter
2 ₱45 per kilogram of rice UR ₱45 per kilogram
3 100 centimeters per meter UR 100 cm per meter
4 60 seeds in 3 plant boxes
5 ₱720 for 6 hours of tutoring
6 120 pages read in 4 days
7 ₱150 for 3 kilograms of mangoes
8 300 kilometers on 15 Liters of fuel
9 ₱240 for 8 movie tickets
10 25 loaves of bread baked in 1 hour
III. ACTIVITY 2: Solving Problems Involving Rates (25 Points)
Directions: Read and analyze each problem carefully. Write your complete step-by-step solution and final
answers in the space provided (5 points per item).
Problem 1: Bakery Daily Output
A local bakery shop can bake 75 cakes in 15 days.
a) How many cakes can the bakery bake in 1 day (Unit Rate)?
b) At this exact rate, how many cakes can they bake in 8 days?
Solution & Final Answer:
Problem 2: Population Density Calculation
The population of Davao City in 2023 was estimated at 1,800,000 people, covering a land area of 2,444
square kilometers.
• Calculate the population density of Davao City (number of people per square kilometer). Round off your
final answer to the nearest whole person.
Solution & Final Answer:
Problem 3: Parcel Delivery Services
A courier delivery person can deliver 45 packages in 3 hours.
a) What is the delivery person's rate per hour?
b) How many packages can they deliver in 7 hours working at the same speed?
Solution & Final Answer:
Problem 4: Bulk Item Pricing
A specialty box of chocolates costs ₱500 per box.
• How much will a customer pay if they buy 4 boxes of chocolates?
Solution & Final Answer:
Problem 5: Speed and Distance Coverage
A long-distance cyclist rode 480 kilometers non-stop in 60 hours.
a) Calculate the cyclist's average speed in kilometers per hour (km/h).
b) How far (in kilometers) can the cyclist travel in 1 full day (24 hours)?
Solution & Final Answer:
IV. ACTIVITY 3: Reflection & Critical Thinking (10 Points)
Directions: Answer the following reflection questions in 2–3 clear sentences.
1. Practical Shopping Application: Why is computing the unit rate helpful when comparing two
different brands or box sizes of the same product at the grocery store?
