2 Welcome to the online learning course on Management at Ho Chi Minh City Open
University.
This course is a part of the Business English curriculum and aims to provide you
with a solid foundation in management knowledge and the essential skills required
to become an effective manager. Throughout this course, you will explore the
fundamentals of management and learn how to apply the four key functions of
management: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling, as well as essential
skills to real-world scenarios.
Studying management holds great value for several reasons. Firstly, it equips you
with the necessary business English language skills. You will become familiar
with management-specific terminology frequently used in the field of Business
English.
Secondly, considering the reality of work, it is highly likely that after graduating
and entering the workforce, you will either be in a managerial position or work
closely with managers. For aspiring managers, understanding the principles of

management serves as the foundation upon which you can build your knowledge
and skills in this field. Even if you don't envision yourself in a managerial role, you
will still need to collaborate with managers in various capacities.
Lastly, the universality of management highlights its importance across all types
and sizes of organizations, at every organizational level and work area, regardless
of their geographical location. Managers in every organization need to perform the
fundamental functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. This
universality emphasizes the wide-ranging applicability and significance of
management principles.
In general, studying management provides you with valuable business English
language skills, prepares you for managerial roles or collaboration with managers,
and underscores the universal relevance of management principles in all types of
organizations.
By the end of this course, you will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Upon completing this course, you will have attained the following specific learning
outcomes:
• Comprehend management concepts: You will be able to articulate and
explain management's fundamental principles and theories. This includes
understanding key concepts such as organizational structure, decision-
making processes, and strategic planning.
• Implement the four functions of management: You will develop the
ability to apply the four essential functions of management - planning,

organizing, leading, and controlling - in practical scenarios. This involves
creating effective plans, coordinating resources, motivating and guiding
teams, and monitoring performance to achieve organizational objectives.
• Execute the tasks of a manager: You will be equipped to carry out the core
responsibilities of a manager, including planning for future objectives,
establishing efficient organizational structures, leading teams toward
success, and implementing control mechanisms to ensure progress and
quality.
• Demonstrate effective communication and teamwork management: You
will enhance your communication skills, enabling you to convey ideas,
instructions, and feedback clearly and concisely. Additionally, you will

Welcome to this exciting learning journey where we will delve into the various
topics essential for achieving our learning objectives. The course is structured into
nine chapters and two additional readings, each contributing to our understanding
of management principles. Let's explore the content in more detail:
Chapter 1: Introduction to Management - This chapter provides an overview of
6 management, covering its goals, managerial tasks, and roles, as well as the different
levels and skills required of managers.
"The Evolution of Management Theories" - In this supplementary reading
material, we will explore the historical development of management theories,
including classical approaches, behavioral approaches, quantitative approaches,
and contemporary perspectives.
Chapter 2: The Heart of Effective Management - Here, we will focus on the
factors that greatly impact managerial effectiveness, including personality traits,
emotions, values, and attitudes.
Chapter 3: Managerial Environment - This chapter examines the internal and
external environments in which managers operate, emphasizing their significance
and influence on managerial decision-making.
Chapters 4, 5, 6, and 7: The Four Functions of Management - These chapters
are dedicated to the four fundamental functions of management: planning,
organizing, leading, and controlling. We will thoroughly study each function,
including topics such as goal setting, strategic analysis, organizational structure
design, human resources management, leadership, motivation, organizational
control, and the importance of control systems.
Further Reading: "Decision-making" - In this additional reading, we will delve
into the intricacies of the decision-making process, understanding its various steps
and gaining practical experience in applying them.
Chapters 8 and 9: Manager's Skills - These chapters focus on two crucial skills
for managers: communication in management and team management. We will
explore effective communication techniques, both verbal and non-verbal, and study
strategies for building and managing successful teams.
To study this subject effectively, the first thing you should do is review the course
outline in order to understand the learning objectives, outcomes, reference
materials, program structure, process evaluation, and final evaluation. After that,
you should review the introduction of the course in the introduction chapter. Then,
it would help if you studied each chapter. In each chapter, you should listen to the
lecture and read the script, which you can listen to and read multiple times. There
is also a glossary table in each chapter, which you should memorize. Each chapter
has 2 or 3 topics, and each topic has exercises to reinforce your knowledge. At the
end of each chapter, there is an assessment to obtain the process score. The final
assessments for each topic and each chapter are designed to familiarize you with
the forms of assessment so that you can easily do the final exam. At the end of the
course, you will have a sample test with three types of questions: multiple-choice,
matching quiz, and fill-in-the-blank. In addition, you will have two discussion
topics and three video conferences, and all of them will be scored for the process.
After completing the course, you should review everything again to ensure that you
have memorized all the vocabulary and understood the core content of the lesson.
