Obstructed and Narrow Sidewalks
The main issue here in urban areas such as Angeles, Pampanga is that businesses, vendors,
and private individuals have invaded the sidewalks. The people who walk on these roads tend to
be victims of accidents, and this has made their lives very inconvenient. The locations of some
places that are either obstructed or narrow because of these scenarios are Santo Rosario, Nepo
Mall, Jenra Mall Plaridel Steet.
This problem is also heightened by the poor
enforcement of the city ordinances and lack of respect
for pedestrian rights. The impacts of blocked sidewalks
lead to increased accidents, an inconvenience to
pedestrians, decreased walkability, economic impacts
on businesses, and reduction in the aesthetic appeal of
towns. This calls for a serious control of the rules and
enforcement, public awareness, as well as urban
planning interventions to ensure that sidewalks
become accessible and safe for everyone passing
through.
According to a case study entitled “Impact of Roadside Vendors and Inadequate
Walkability Infrastructures on Pedestrian Safety in Addis Ababa: A Case Study of Gulele Sub-City “.
This article discusses the effect of roadside vending and walkability infrastructures on pedestrian
safety in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It emphasizes the problems caused by sidewalk encroachment,
including vendors, utility poles, and illegal constructions. Possible solutions are suggested, such as
providing spaces for vendors, improving pedestrian facilities.
This research aids the pedestrian mobility and safety in Gulele Sub-City, Addis Ababa. It
has identified key factors that are influencing the pedestrian safety to include inadequacy in
walkability infrastructures and roadside vending. The findings of this study suggest creating
designated vending areas to avert sidewalk encroachment and, hence, improving pedestrian
safety. The enhancement of road design and management should provide better parking solutions
and alleviate traffic congestion.
This study provides a comprehensive look at how urban planning can address the dual
issues of traffic management and vendor relocation to improve overall pedestrian safety and

Clogged Drainage and Improper Waste Management
This problem of waste management and blocked drainage exists, mostly in Santo
Rosario, Henson Road, and Plaridel Street of Angeles City. This brings about improper disposal
of wastes, leading to health hazards, environmental pollution, and aesthetics of public places
because the people do not have ample knowledge about segregation, which could have
avoided inadequate infrastructure of waste disposal and brought waste to their places of
comfort. The same happens with drainage systems, chocked by poor waste disposal, lack of
proper maintenance and rapid urbanization without adequate planning. Such cases result in
frequent flooding, property damage, and health risks because of stagnation. Environmental
problems bring about soil and water contamination, air pollution, and local biodiversity
destruction. All these issues are countered by better waste management practice, proper
maintenance of drainage systems, and increased public awareness and participation in
environmental conservation.
A case study regarding the Abiergué drainage basin in Yaoundé, Cameroon, exposed
the significant impact of uncollected solid waste on the drainage system. In the area, 45% of
the waste generated was not collected, and this caused a significant obstruction to the
drainage system, thereby causing floods. To solve these problems, the study implemented the
following key solutions: educating the residents on proper waste disposal and segregation,
improving the waste collection infrastructure, and maintaining the drainage systems regularly.
In addition, soil traps, that were considered innovative, capture solid materials within the
drains without allowing the runoff to exceed the volume in the pipes thus preventing clogging.
The improved functionality of the drainage systems and reduced flood incidents are well
worth the model for any comparable urban area facing problems associated with waste
management and drainages.
