Eligibility for Assistant Professor Rank

With 12 years of higher education teaching experience, you have already exceeded the minimum
time requirement to become an Assistant Professor in Ethiopia. Under the standard Ethiopian
Higher Education Harmonized Senate Legislation, a Master's degree holder needs 4 years of
effective teaching to qualify for promotion.

However, your promotion is not automatic upon hiring. To get promoted from Lecturer to
Assistant Professor, you must meet these specific criteria:

 Teaching Evaluation: You need an average student/peer evaluation score of at least 75% or 80%
(depending on JJU’s specific internal senate legislation) over your last few years of teaching.
 Research Publications: You must have at least one or two peer-reviewed articles published in
reputable journals after receiving your Master’s degree. Alternatively, writing text-books or
teaching modules can sometimes count toward this.
 Community Service: You need to show active participation in university committees, community
outreach, or regional climate/environmental projects.

What you should do: When you submit your application, include your official service certificates
from your previous university, copies of your published papers, and any teaching evaluation
summary letters. You can negotiate your rank during the hiring process or apply for a promotion
through the department head immediately after your probationary period.
