Basic Risk Assessment

Risk assessment is a systematic approach to identify hazards and evaluate potential consequences before starting work. It involves defining the task, assessing risks based on likelihood and severity, and implementing controls in a prioritized manner. Regular reviews of the risk assessment are necessary when work conditions change or incidents occur.

Basic Risk Assessment

Risk assessment is a structured method for identifying hazards, evaluating potential

consequences, and selecting controls before work begins.

The first step is to define the task and identify hazards such as moving equipment, stored
energy, working at height, pressure, electricity, chemicals, and manual handling.

Risk is commonly evaluated by considering the likelihood of an event and the severity of its
possible consequences. Higher risks require stronger controls.

The hierarchy of controls prioritizes elimination and substitution where possible, followed by
engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment.

A risk assessment should be reviewed when the work scope changes, new hazards appear, an
incident occurs, or existing controls are found to be ineffective.
