TutorialSet-08

This document contains tutorial problems related to solid state physics, specifically focusing on superconductivity concepts such as critical temperature, critical field, penetration depth, and correlation length. It includes calculations for superconductors like lead and mercury, requiring the application of formulas to determine various properties at different temperatures. The problems are designed for students in the Department of Physics & Astrophysics at the University of Delhi.

Solid State Physics (2026): Tutorial Set-08

Department of Physics & Astrophysics

University of Delhi, Delhi-110007

1. If superconducting lead has a critical temperature of 7.26 K at zero magnetic field

and a critical field of 8  105 A/m at 0 K, Find the critical field at 5 K?

2. (a) A flux quantum (fluxoid) is approximately equal to 2  10-7 Gauss-cm2. A type II

superconductor is placed in a small magnetic field, which is then slowly increased
till the field starts penetrating the superconductor. The strength of the field at this
point is (2/)  105 gauss. Find the penetration depth of this superconductor.
(b) In the above question (b), the applied field is further increased till
superconductivity is completely destroyed. The strength of the superconducting
field is now (8/)  105 gauss. The correlation length of the superconductor is?

3. London penetration depth for a sample at 5 K and 7 K are 41.2 nm and 180.3 nm
respectively. Find the transition temperature of the sample.

4. The critical magnetic fields of a superconductor at temperature 4 K and 8 K are 11

mA/m and 5.5 mA/m, respectively. What is the transition temperature
approximately.

5. For mercury of mass number 202, it is found that α = 0.5 and the transition
temperature is 4.153 K. Find the transition temperature for isotopes of mercury
of mass number 200.
