Simple, Compound and Complex Sentences

Simple Sentences
A simple sentence has one complete idea.

Examples:
• The dog barked.
• I like ice cream.

Remember: One complete idea.

Compound Sentences
A compound sentence has two complete ideas joined by a joining word.

Joining words: and, but, or, so

Examples:
• The dog barked, and the cat ran away.
• I was tired, but I finished my homework.

Remember: Two complete ideas joined together.

Complex Sentences
A complex sentence has one complete idea and one incomplete idea.

Common words: because, when, after, before, if, although

Examples:
• We stayed inside because it was raining.
• When the bell rang, the learners left.

Remember: One complete idea + one incomplete idea.

Easy Trick
• Simple = 1 complete idea.
• Compound = 2 complete ideas.
• Complex = 1 complete idea + 1 incomplete idea.
