PP#2: DESIGN OF COMPRESSION MEMBERS
P1. The floor plan area of a multi-storey braced building is as shown in Figure. All the columns
are of section ISHB 450@907.43 N/m, the longitudinal beams of section ISMB 550@
1017.3 N/m and the transverse beams of section ISMB 350@ 514.04 N/m. The storey
height is 3.6 m and columns are fixed at the base. For a column in a typical floor of the
building determine the effective lengths KLz and KLy. For the purpose of calculating total
axial load on the column in the storey assume total distributed load of 40 kN/m2 from all the
floors above.
Section A-A
P2. Design a single unequal angle strut 3 m long between intersections for a factored
compressive load of 75 kN. The member is to be connected at each end to 10 mm thick
gusset plate with two 20 mm diameter bolts. Use Fe410 grade steel.
P3. A compression member is fabricated using one channel
section ISMC 250 and two angle sections ISA 75×100×12
and ISA 75×150×12 arranged as shown in the Figure. The
length of column is 7.0 m which is effectively held in
position at both ends and restrained against rotation at one
end. The cross section is properly connected to act as an
integral unit. Determine the load carrying capacity of the
member when grade of structural steel is Fe410.

P4. Four ISHB 225 @43.1 kg/m columns are used to support an overhead square tank at a
height of 9.0 m. The columns are placed at the corners of the tank in such a way that the
webs are in same direction. The lateral supports are provided at the one-third height against
both the axes. If the bottom ends of the column are fixed, determine the maximum load a
column can support.

P5. Design a column section to carry working axial load of 5000 kN. The column is 5 m long
and is effectively held in position at both ends but restrained against rotation at one end
only. ISHB 450@ 92.5 kg/m rolled sections of grade Fe410 is available in the stock; if
required, the load carrying capacity of the column can be enhanced by welding channel
sections to the flange of the I-section.
P6. Design a built-up cross-section consisting of four rolled steel angles of grade Fe410 steel for a
6.5 m high laced column to carry a service load of 1500 kN. The column is effectively held in
position but not restrained against rotation at both the ends.

P7. A built-up section using two ISLC 350 @38.8kg/m was chosen to carry a factored load of
1000 kN for a column of effective length of 12 m for both axes of flexural bending. The
sections are arranged as shown in figure so that clear spacing is 220 mm.
a) Check the suitability of the section as per IS800 provisions
of flexure buckling.
b) Design a single lacing system assuming that lacing bars are
kept at 60o to the vertical axis of the column member.
c) Design a system of battens (intermediate and end battens)
for the column, and
d) Comment on the efficacy of the lacing and batten system
as designed in (b) and (c).
