1. Introduction
Community service plays a vital role in developing social responsibility, teamwork, and awareness
among students. As a part of our community service program, we selected Gorkarna Sahid smark
park as a suitable location to contribute to society.
Gorkarna Sahid smark is a beautiful and popular destination in Kathmandu. It offers a picturesque
and mesmerizing view of the Kathmandu valley, attracting many local visitors. Due to its natural
beauty and peaceful environment, it has become a popular recreational area. However, like many
tourist attractions, it faces problems related to waste management and cleanliness.
Therefore, in collaboration with the Management Committee of Sahid Park and the Chairperson
of park, we organized a week-long cleaning campaign to help maintain and improve the cleanliness
of this important tourist area.
2. Objectives of the Cleaning Campaign
The major objectives of our community service program were:
To maintain cleanliness in Jagdol area
To reduce environmental pollution caused by unmanaged waste
To create awareness among local visitors about proper waste disposal
To develop civic responsibility among students
To support local management efforts in preserving the beauty of the area
3. Duration and Time Schedule
The cleaning campaign was conducted for one week.
We worked for two hours each day in the Jagdol area.
All necessary equipment such as gloves, garbage bags, and cleaning materials were provided by
the forest office and park management committee.
4. Description of Daily Activities
Day 1 – Site Observation and Planning
On the first day, we observed the overall condition of Jagdol. We identified areas where garbage
was mostly scattered, especially near resting spots and walking paths. We discussed how to
divide responsibilities among our team members to work efficiently.
Day 2 to Day 6 – Cleaning and Waste Collection
During these days, we carried out the main cleaning activities. Our tasks included:
Collecting plastic bottles, food wrappers, and paper waste
Removing scattered garbage from bushes and pathways
Sweeping open areas
Separating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste
Packing collected waste into garbage bags for proper disposal
We tried our best to clean as much area as possible within the two-hour time limit each day.
Day 7 – Final Cleaning and Evaluation
On the final day, we reviewed the cleaned areas and removed any remaining waste. We
compared the condition of the area with the first day and observed noticeable improvement in
cleanliness.
5. Challenges Faced
During our cleaning campaign, we faced several difficulties:
1. Many local tourists were throwing rubbish wherever they found it convenient.
2. There was a lack of properly placed and clearly visible dustbins.
3. Some visitors showed a lack of civic sense and environmental responsibility.
4. There were insufficient signboards with messages encouraging cleanliness and
discouraging littering.
These challenges made our task more difficult but also helped us understand real social
problems.
6. Observations
Jagdol is a peaceful and naturally beautiful place that provides a stunning view of
Kathmandu city.
Despite its beauty, pollution due to unmanaged waste reduces its attractiveness.
There appears to be a need for better coordination between visitors and management
authorities.
Public awareness about environmental protection still needs improvement.
7. Suggestions for Improvement
Based on our experience, we suggest:
Installation of more dustbins at visible and accessible locations
Placement of awareness boards with clear environmental messages
Regular monitoring and maintenance by the management committee
Organization of frequent community cleaning programs
Implementation of strict rules or fines for litterin
8. Conclusion
The week-long cleaning campaign at Sahid smark park was a meaningful and educational
experience. Through teamwork and dedication, we were able to improve the cleanliness of the
area to some extent. Although challenges were present, the program helped us understand the
importance of environmental conservation and civic responsibility.
This community service activity taught us that maintaining cleanliness is not only the
responsibility of the government or management committee, but also the duty of every
individual.
9. Collective Reflection
This program helped us realize the value of collective effort in bringing positive change to
society. We developed teamwork skills, communication skills, and a deeper sense of
environmental awareness. This experience encouraged to take more responsibility in protecting
public places in the future.
