RATIO (CBR)
CALIFORNIA BEARING RATIO (CBR)
SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
TO EVALUATE POTENTIAL STRENGTH OF SUBGRADE,
SUB-BASE AND BASE COURSE MATERIAL, INCLUDING
RECYCLED MATERIALS, FOR USE IN ROAD AND AIRFIELD
PAVEMENTS. THE CBR VALUE OBTAINED IN THIS TEST
FORMS AN INTEGRAL PART OF SEVERAL FLEXIBLE
PAVEMENT DESIGN METHODS.

CALIFORNIA BEARING RATIO (CBR)
Sample Preparation:
• All samples should be in air-dried condition or in the drying
apparatus (oven) at a temperature not exceeding 60°C [140°F]
• Reducing Sample to Testing Size in accordance to AASHTO T 248
• Weigh sample of 6kilogram

Retained Sample using Sieve No. ¾ and Sieve No.4)
• 5. Using the data of OMC from the laboratory compaction.
Compute the amount of water
CALIFORNIA BEARING RATIO (CBR)
Testing Procedure:
Sample Compaction Preparation:
1. Weigh CBR Mold with baseplate without collar and spacer then record its mass.
2. Assemble CBR mold with base plate, spacer, filter paper and collar.
3. Mix the soil with computed amount of water on a Big Pan
4. Place the soil in the mold at 5 equal layers and freefall drop the 4.54kg and 18 inches
Rammer at 65 blows each layer
5. Remove the collar then trim the top layer and replace large materials present with
smaller ones.
6. Remove the spacer, Flip the CBR mold then place filter paper and records its mass.
CALIFORNIA BEARING RATIO (CBR)
Testing Procedure:
Soaking:
1. Place the Collar, Filter Paper and 4.54kg Surcharge Weight
2. Immersed it in water, allowing free access of water to the top and bottom of the
specimen
3. Tripod and dial indicator placed on top of the mold and an initial reading is taken
4. The water level in mold and tank maintained approx. 1 inch above the top of the
specimen during soaking. Specimen soaked for 96 hours (4days)
5. After 24hours, get the second dial reading
6. After 96hours Final dial reading is taken and percent swell calculated
7. Remove specimen from the tank, and allow to drain downward for 15minutes.
8. Remove surcharge weights after draining and record its mass.
CALIFORNIA BEARING RATIO (CBR)
Testing Procedure:
Penetration Test:
1. Penetration piston (Piston seated with 44N (10lb) load) seated after one surcharge
weight has been placed on the specimen.
2. Penetration dial indicator and load indicators set to zero.
3. Load applied to the piston so the penetration rate is uniform at 1.3mm (0.05 in.) per
minute.
4. Loads recorded at penetrations of 0.32, 0.64, 0.95, 1.27, 1.91, 2.54, 3.81, 5.08, 6.35
and 7.62mm (0.0125, 0.025, 0.38, 0.050, 0.075, 0.100, 0.150, 0.200, 0.250 and
0.300 in.)
5. Plot the Stress-Strain Curve.
