Statistical Hypothesis Tutorial I

The document discusses inferential statistics in the context of agricultural production and natural resource management, focusing on formulating null and alternative hypotheses. It presents scenarios for testing the productivity of a new harvesting machine and the impact of conservation efforts on forest area loss. Additionally, it examines the fairness of a coin through hypothesis testing with specified rejection regions and calculates error probabilities (α and β) for different scenarios.

Inferential Statistics I : Tutorial I

[Link].1.1. An agricultural producer who runs a mega farm in Machinga is

considering the purchase of a new machine for harvesting crops. If µ0 (given)
is the true average yield of crops per acre harvested by their old machine, and
µ is the corresponding true unknown average yield for the new machine, the
producer wants to test the null hypothesis µ = µ0 versus a suitable alternative.
What should the alternative hypothesis be if the producer does not want to buy
the new machine unless it is:
(a) more productive than the old one?
(b) At least 20% more productive than the old one?

[Link].1.2. Formulate an alternative hypothesis for each of the following

null hypotheses in the context of natural resources management:
(a) H0 : The amount of forest area lost in the past decade has remained constant
despite new conservation efforts.
(b) H0 : The proportion of people in a community using a new water purifica-
tion system is less than 30%.
(c) H0 : The median annual income of workers in the mining sector is MK425, 000.

[Link].1.3. It is suspected that a coin is not balanced (not fair). Let p be

the probability of tossing a head. To test H0 : p = 0.5 against the alternative
hypothesis Ha : p > 0.5, a coin is tossed 15 times. Let Y equal the number
of times a head is observed in the 15 tosses of this coin. Assume the rejection
region to be {Y ≥ 10}.
(a) Find α.
(b) Find β for p = 0.7.
(c) Find β for p = 0.6.
(d) Find the rejection region for {Y ≥ K} for α = 0.01, and α = 0.03.
(e) For the alternative Ha : p = 0.7, find β for the values of α given in (d).
