Transformations Notes

The document outlines four types of geometric transformations: Translation, Reflection, Rotation, and Enlargement. Each transformation includes specific requirements such as terminology, mathematical representations (like vectors and equations), and methods for execution. Tips and techniques are provided to assist in understanding and applying each transformation effectively.

Transformations- NOTES

Tip: Watch BellaMaths, or other YT videos if unable to understand.

1. Translation

This is just "sliding" the shape.

 Must include: The word Translation.

 Must include: A Column Vector

o Top number (x): Change in X; Right (+) or Left (-).

o Bottom number (y): Change in y; Up (+) or Down (-)

o From the object, just move in steps according to the vector to get coordinates of
image

2. Reflection

Think of this as a mirror image.

 Must include: The word Reflection.

 Must include: The Equation of the mirror line (e.g. x=2, y=3)
o Tip: The x axis is the line y = 0. The y-axis is the line x = 0.
o Tip: Flip your page to say shapes straight if they are slant
o To find mirror line: Take one corresponding point on obj and image, e.g. R and R’.
Using a compass-Construct 2 arcs from R, on both sides. Construct 2 arcs for R’
on both sides. Draw a straight line through the intersecting arcs Line of
reflection
o When reflecting across a line, e.g. y=1; Draw the line, and make sure that the
corresponding points are equidistant from the line of reflection.

3. Rotation

Turning the shape around a "pin" point.

 Must include: The word Rotation.

 Must include: The Angle and Direction (90 degrees Clockwise, 90 Anti-clockwise, or
180)

 Must include: The Center of Rotation as a coordinate (x,y)

o To rotate, use tracing paper

o To find center of rotation: Use trial and error- Trace the obj., and try to map it
onto image to find center.

4. Enlargement

Making the shape bigger or smaller.

 Must include: The word Enlargement.

 Must include: The Scale Factor (k).

o If k = 2, it's twice as big.

o If k = 1/2 it's half the size (but still called an enlargement!).

o If k is negative, the shape flips to the opposite side of the center (opposite side
of shape)

 Must include: The Center of Enlargement (x, y).

o To find center of enlargement- Draw lines passing through corresponding point

from the object to the image. Where all those points intersect is the center of
enlargement.

o When center of enlargement, scale factor is given, and you need to draw the
image, then: Count steps of object points to center, multiply this by scale factor
(e.g. -2), move those steps FROM CENTER TO VERTICES NOT VICE VERSA. Move
those steps in opposite direction from center).
