Online Safety, Security, Ethics, and Etiquette

Internet safety, or online safety, is the knowledge of maximizing

the user's personal safety and security risks to private information
and property associated with using the internet, and the self-
protection from computer crime in general.

One of the examples

is Cyberbullying.
What is Cyberbullying
or Cyber
harassment?

Cyberbullying is a
form of bullying or harassment using electronic means. It has become
increasingly common, especially among teenagers, as the digital
sphere has expanded and technology has advanced.

Internet is defined as the

information superhighway.
This means that anyone has
access to this highway, can
place info, and can grab that
info.

Types of Information with risk:

• First Name
• Last Name
• Middle Name
• Current and Previous School
• Cellphone Number
• Mother’s and Father’s name
• Sibling’s Name
• Address
• Home Phone Number
• Birthday
• Email Address

Some Tips to Stay Safe Online:

1. Be mindful on what you share online.
2. Do not just accept terms and conditions, read it.

3. Do not share your password with anyone.

4. Do not talk to strangers whether online or face to face.

The internet can be pretty scary place if you allow the wrong people to make their way onto your friends list
which is why it is so important to be cautious as you begin to explore the world of social media.
5. Never post anything about a future vacation.
Posting your travel photos while you’re still on vacation is like sending out an open invitation for someone
to come and rob your home. Local thieves troll social media all the time looking for opportunity. It’s usually
not too difficult to figure out where you live for criminals who do this for a living.

6. Add only friends you know in real life.

One of the reasons you should never accept a friend request from someone you don’t know is that you don’t
know if the request is coming from a real person. Hackers do set up Facebook accounts for fake people using
photos they find from somewhere on the internet. If you accept a friend request from a fake profile setup by a
hacker, then they cannot only see everything you upload to Facebook the can download also your photos and
information and setup a fake account using your name and sending requests out to all your friends. Once that
happens, their method of operation can gather dozens or hundreds of accounts which allows them to send those
new “friends” spam and links to malware. When you get a friend request from s omeone who’s account was
hacked, this is likely how it happens.

7. Avoid visiting untrusted websites.

Most people are unaware of the fact that you don’t have to intentionally download or click a
malicious attachment in order to compromise your computer’s security. Malicious websites and drive-
by downloads are just ways that your security can become compromised by doing nothing more than
visiting a website. Best example is viewing porn sites.
Internet Threats:
1. Malware – stands for malicious software.
5 Types of Malware:
1. Virus – a malicious program designed to replicate itself and transfer from one computer to another
(internet, local networks, Financial Document Services (FDs,) Credit Default Swap (CDs).

2. Worm – a malicious program that transfers from one computer to another by any types of means. Ex.
ILOVEYOU worm

3. Trojan – a malicious program that disguises as a useful program but once downloaded or installed,
leaves your PC unprotected and allows hackers to get your information.

4. Spyware – a program that runs in the background without you knowing it (thus called “spy”). It has the
ability to monitor what you are currently doing and typing through keylogging.
5. Adware – a program designed to send you advertisements, mostly as pop-ups.

2. Spam – an unwanted email mostly from bots or advertisers. It can be used to send malware.

3. Phishing – an unwanted acquisition of sensitive personal information like passwords and credit card
details.

4. Botnet – group of compromised computers connected to a network (“zombie”).

Contextualized Online Search and Research Skills

characters specified by the user, used especially for finding particular sites on the World Wide Web.
