Design Problem: Office Space with Studio Apartment Featuring Modular

Furniture and Hidden Storage Solutions
Project Overview:
Design an office space that seamlessly transforms into a studio apartment,
catering to a young professional or creative entrepreneur who works from
home. The challenge is to create a versatile, compact, and functional space
using modular furniture with hidden storage solutions that allows the user to
easily transition between a productive work environment and a cozy, private
living space. The space should make the most of a limited floor area,
integrating innovative storage ideas and multi-purpose furniture that optimizes
both living and working areas.
Design Brief:
Client Profile:
● The client is a young professional or creative entrepreneur (e.g., interior
designer, graphic designer, or freelance consultant etc.) who works from
home and needs a combination of functional workspace and
comfortable living quarters in one compact area.
● The space should be designed for a single person but allow flexibility for
occasional guests or collaboration with colleagues.
● The client desires a design that is sleek, modern, and minimalist,
focusing on functionality and clean lines.
● The main design goal is to provide a multifunctional space using
modular, space-saving furniture with hidden storage solutions to
maximize the use of the available area (area to be decided).
Key Design Objectives:
1. Modular Furniture Integration:
o Use modular furniture that is flexible, movable, and adaptable to
various functions. The design should allow pieces to be
reconfigured easily to transform from a full-fledged office into a
studio apartment with distinct work and living zones.
o Incorporate modular desks, movable partitions, convertible
sofas, and stackable or foldable furniture to ensure versatility in
the layout.
o Ensure that modular furniture pieces have the ability to adapt to
different user needs (e.g., a desk that transforms into a dining
table or a sofa that doubles as a guest bed).
2. Hidden Storage Solutions:
o Design creative hidden storage solutions that maximize space
efficiency without compromising the clean aesthetic of the space.
Consider:
▪ Under-bed storage for extra bedding, clothes, or office
supplies.
▪ Built-in cabinets or storage units that conceal everyday
items (e.g., pull-out drawers or hidden compartments in
furniture).
▪ Wall-mounted shelves or floating storage to keep floor
space open and uncluttered.
▪ Hidden office supplies storage within furniture to allow for
a tidy and functional workspace.
o Ensure storage solutions are practical, easy to access, and suitable
for both work and living items.
3. Flexible Spatial Zoning:
o Create clear zoning within the space that accommodates both
work and living activities. The zoning should not be rigid but
flexible enough to be adapted based on the time of day or user
preferences.
o Use partitioning walls, modular room dividers, or curtains to
separate the office from the living areas while maintaining an
open flow.
o Consider how furniture can be rearranged to transform the office
into a bedroom or how a sitting area can quickly become a
collaborative workspace.
4. Aesthetic and Mood:
o Design the space to feel modern and minimalist with a focus on
clean lines, neutral colour palettes, and versatile materials that
work in both work and living contexts.
o Incorporate design elements that create an inspiring work
environment while ensuring the studio apartment feels cozy and
welcoming for relaxation after work hours.
o Choose functional yet aesthetically pleasing furniture, lighting,
and finishes (e.g., sleek desk designs, minimalist lounge seating,
and space-saving décor).
5. Lighting Sketch:
o Task Lighting: Provide focused lighting for work areas (e.g., desk
lamps, adjustable floor lamps).
o Ambient Lighting: Create soft, warm lighting for the living area to
enhance relaxation.
o Adjustable Fixtures: Include lighting solutions that can be adapted
for both work and living, such as dimmable lights or
multi-functional pendant lamps.
o Integrate natural light as much as possible by placing workspaces
near windows and using reflective materials to maximize daylight
in the space.
6. Sustainability:
o Use sustainable materials for furniture and finishes, such as
reclaimed wood, eco-friendly textiles, or low-VOC paints.
o Incorporate energy-efficient lighting and appliances to promote
environmental sustainability.
o Design with durability in mind to ensure that furniture pieces last
longer and withstand frequent reconfigurations.
Design Requirements (To be changed [Link] the requirements)
1. Space Planning & Zoning
● Office Area (Work Zone):
o Allocate a dedicated area for professional work (desk, filing,
meetings).
o Ensure sufficient storage for office supplies, documents, and
equipment.
o Design flexible, multifunctional workstations, possibly modular or
adaptable for future needs.
● Living Area (Studio Apartment Zone):
o Incorporate clear zones within the apartment space that combine
living, sleeping, and kitchen areas while maintaining privacy.
o Use furniture arrangements, room dividers, or sliding partitions to
create separation, when necessary, without reducing natural light
flow.
o Ensure easy flow between zones (work-to-living transition) to
avoid congestion.
2. Ergonomics & Comfort
● Office Zone:
o Provide ergonomic office furniture (adjustable chairs, desks, and
appropriate lighting).
o Focus on creating a comfortable work environment with proper
seating arrangements and ambient lighting for long hours of work.
o Incorporate practical elements like a task lighting system, acoustic
solutions (soundproofing), and sufficient natural light.
● Studio Apartment Zone:
o Comfortable furniture that supports relaxation, such as a bed that
can be easily converted into a sofa, or a dining table that doubles
as a work desk.
o Ensure storage solutions are efficient and cleverly integrated (e.g.,
under-bed storage, built-in shelves, and cabinets).
o Create a cozy, personalized space with options for both rest and
recreation.
3. Furniture Design & Layout
● Flexible Furniture: The design should emphasize multifunctional and
space-saving furniture to allow easy transitions between work and home
life.
o Desk to Dining: A folding or extendable table that can serve as a
desk or dining area.
o Convertible Sofa/Bed: A couch that converts into a bed, or a
Murphy bed, to maximize available space.
o Storage Units: Include wall-mounted shelves, modular cabinets, or
storage beneath furniture.
● Compact Kitchen Area: A small kitchen area or kitchenette should be
integrated into the design, utilizing compact and efficient appliances.

4. Color Scheme
● Use neutral tones like gray, white, beige, or light wood finishes to keep
the space feeling spacious and calm.
● Introduce accent colors (e.g., muted greens, navy blues, soft pastels) for
areas that will be used for relaxation, like the living space.
● Create contrast in the office area with bold colors for energy and focus,
but ensure it doesn't feel overwhelming.
5. Privacy & Separation
● Office Area: Design the office space to feel distinct and separate from
the living area, even within an open-plan layout. This could include:
o Use of curtains, sliding doors, or screens to create temporary
partitions.
o Visual cues (wall finishes, rugs, or furniture) to subtly divide
spaces.
● Studio Apartment: Since it's a studio, ensure that there are still
moments of privacy, especially in the sleeping area. You can achieve this
with clever room layout, screens, or curtains.
6. Sustainability & Materials
● Incorporate sustainable materials like bamboo, recycled materials, or
low-VOC paints.
● Consider energy-efficient solutions (LED lighting, energy-saving
appliances).
● Opt for durable finishes for furniture and flooring, ensuring long-lasting
use in both professional and living areas.
7. Aesthetic Considerations
● The design should reflect a balance between professionalism for the
office and comfort for the living area.
● Incorporate design elements that add character to the space: unique
artworks, textiles, or plants to create an inspiring and welcoming
atmosphere.
● Explore minimalist or industrial styles, which are often popular for small
spaces, to maximize utility while maintaining an appealing aesthetic.
8. Access & Flow
● Ensure clear paths of movement that are unobstructed in both the office
and living areas.
● The design should also incorporate flexibility, where students can change
layouts depending on personal or professional needs.
By considering these requirements, the interior design students can create a
functional, aesthetically pleasing, and comfortable hybrid space that blends
an office environment with the intimacy of a studio apartment.
