IT Basics Study Notes for Beginners

1. What is Information Technology (IT)?


Information Technology (IT) is the use of computers, software, networks, and databases to store,
process, and share information. Main areas include Computer Hardware, Software Development,
Networking, Database Management, Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, Web Development, and
Technical Support.

2. Computer Hardware
Hardware refers to the physical parts of a computer. Input devices: Keyboard, Mouse, Scanner,
Microphone. Output devices: Monitor, Printer, Speakers. CPU is the brain of the computer. Storage
devices include HDD, SSD and USB drives. RAM is temporary memory used while programs run.

3. Computer Software
Software is a set of instructions that tells the computer what to do. System software includes
Windows, Linux and macOS. Application software includes Word, Excel, Chrome and other user
programs.

4. Operating Systems
The Operating System manages hardware, files, applications and security. Examples include
Windows 11, Ubuntu Linux, and macOS.

5. Networking Basics
A network is a group of connected computers. LAN covers a small area like a school or office. WAN
covers a larger area such as the Internet. Common devices are routers, switches, modems and
access points. IP addresses uniquely identify devices.
6. Internet Basics
The Internet is a worldwide network connecting millions of devices. Common services include
email, websites, cloud storage and online learning. WWW means World Wide Web. URL means
website address.

7. Cybersecurity Basics
Cybersecurity protects computers and data. Threats include viruses, malware, phishing and
ransomware. Use strong passwords, updates and antivirus protection.

8. Database Basics
Databases store information in an organized way. Examples include student records, banking data
and hospital systems. Popular database systems include MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle and
PostgreSQL. SQL example: SELECT * FROM Students;

9. Programming Basics
Programming involves writing instructions for computers. Popular languages include Python, Java,
C++, JavaScript and C#. Example Python command: print("Hello World")

10. Cloud Computing


Cloud computing provides computing services over the Internet. Examples include Microsoft Azure,
AWS and Google Cloud. Benefits include accessibility, backup and cost savings.
