Steam generation
1. A steam engine obtains steam from a boiler at a pressure of 15 bar and 98% dry. It is observed that the steam
loses 21 kJ of heat per kg while flowing through the pipeline, the pressure remaining constant. Calculate the
dryness fraction of the steam at the engine end of the pipeline.
2. The following observations were made during a boiler trial:
Coal used = 280 kg
Calorific value of coal = 30,500 kJ/kg
Water evaporated = 2250 kg
Steam pressure = 12 bar ; From Steam Table (12 bar) hf=798 kJ/kg (Enthalpy of
Saturated Water) hfg=1985 kJ/kg (Latent Heat of Vaporization)
Dryness fraction = 0.96
Feed-water Enthalpy= hf1=159.1 kJ/kg
Calculate:
i. Equivalent evaporation from
ii. Boiler efficiency.
3. A boiler trial produced the following data:
Coal consumed = 500 kg
Calorific value = 28,800 kJ/kg
Steam produced = 4050 kg
Steam pressure = 15 bar; From Steam Table (15 bar) hf=845 kJ/kg (Enthalpy of Saturated Water)
hfg=1946 kJ/kg (Latent Heat of Vaporization)
Dryness fraction = 0.95
Feed-water Enthalpy= hf1= 150.73 kJ/kg
Calculate:
i) Equivalent evaporation.
ii) Boiler efficiency.
4. A boiler produces steam of enthalpy 2620 KJ/Kg with the feed water of enthalpy 270 KJ/Kg. If the
steam rate 50Kg/hr. then find the steam generation factor and the boiler Power in KW. the latent heat
of evaporation is 2257 KJ/Kg.
5. In a boiler, feed water supplied per hour is 205 kg while coal fired per hour is 23 Kg. The net enthalpy
rise per kg of water is 145KJ. If the calorific value of the coal is 2050KJ/Kg, then calculate the boiler
efficiency.
6. A boiler uses 18 kg air per kg of fuel. Determine the minimum height of chimney required to produce
a draught of 25 mm of water. The mean temperature of chimney gases is 315oC and the outside air
27oC.
7. The following data pertain to a steam power plant:
Height of chimney = 30m; draught produced = 16.5 mm of water; temperature of the flue
gas = 360oC; temperature of boiler house = 28oC; Atmospheric pressure = 1.013 bar.
Determine the quantity of air used per kg of fuel burnt in the boiler.
