Assignment

The document provides calculations for the maximum speed of two single acting reciprocating pumps to prevent separation during the delivery stroke. The first pump has specific dimensions and conditions leading to a maximum speed of 40.692 rpm, while the second pump has different parameters resulting in speeds of 30.923 rpm and 31.43 rpm under varying conditions. Both scenarios consider atmospheric pressure and the height of water delivery.

1.

The diameter and stroke length of a single acting reciprocating pump are 100 mm
and 300 mm respectively. The water is lifted to a height of 20 m above the centre of
the pump. Find the maximum speed at which the pump may be run so that no
separation occurs during the delivery stroke, if the diameter and length of delivery
pipe are 50 mm and 25 m respectively. Separation occurs if the absolute pressure
head in the cylinder during delivery stroke falls below 2.5 m of water. Take
atmospheric pressure head as 10.3 m of water.
{Ans: had = 27.8 m, 𝝎 = 𝟒. 𝟐𝟔𝟏𝟐𝟒 𝒓𝒂𝒅./𝒔𝒆𝒄, N = 40.692 rpm}

2. A single acting reciprocating pump has a plunger 10 cm diameter and a stroke of

length 200 mm. The centre of the pump is 4 m above the water level in the sump
and 14 m below the level of water in a tank to which water is delivered by the pump.
The diameter and length of the suction pipe are 40 mm and 6 m while of delivery
pipe are 30 mm and 18 m respectively. Determine the maximum speed at which the
pump may be run without separation, if separation occurs at 7.848 N/cm2 below the
atmospheric pressure. Take atmospheric pressure head as 10.3 m of water.
{Ans: has = 4 m, 𝝎 = 𝟑. 𝟐𝟑𝟖 𝒓𝒂𝒅./𝒔𝒆𝒄, N = 30.923 rpm had = 22 m, 𝝎 =
𝟑. 𝟐𝟗𝟏𝟒𝟔 𝒓𝒂𝒅./𝒔𝒆𝒄, N = 31.43 rpm}
