TYPE OF ACTIVITY : CONCEPT NOTES
ACTIVITY TITLE : PARTS AND FUNCTION OF COMPOUND
LIGHT MICROSCOPE
LEARNING TARGET/S : I can recognize the parts and function of
Compound Light Microscope.
REFERENCE/S : You and the Natural World by Teresita F.

From the previous lesson, you’ve learned that there are two types of
microscope. In this lesson you are going to learn about Compound Light
Microscope.
Compound Light Microscope (CLM) is the usual microscope that is
used for general observation of microscopic specimen (objects being
studied under the microscope). It has a multiple lens that can magnify up to
1,000x magnification. The parts of this microscope can be categorized as
follows:
1. MECHANICAL PARTS – used to support and operates
2. MAGNIFYING PARTS – used to see and enlarge specimen
3. ILLUMINATING PARTS – used to supply light during visualization
Here are the PARTS and FUNCTION OF COMPOUND LIGHT
MICROSCOPE
PARTS FUNCTION
Hole in the middle of the stage which allows light to
1. Aperture
enter
Frame to which the base, body and stage are
2. Arm
attached
Horseshoe structure which supports the entire

Hollow tube which serves as the optical housing of
4. Body tube

5. Coarse adjustment Upper large pair which moves body tube for focusing
knob the LPO
Located under the iris diaphragm which gathers and
6. Condenser
focuses light

Black top covering which protects the objectives from

the dust
[Link] or ocular Upper hole which contains the magnifying lens you
lens look through, usually 10x magnification
10. Fine Adjustment Lower small pair which moves body tube for focusing
Knob the HPO
Screw located on the side of the pillar which is use for
11. Inclination joint
tilting the microscope
Located under the stage and above the condenser
12. Iris diaphragm
which helps in controlling the amount of light
Circular mirror located at the base which serves as
13. Mirror
the light source
14. Objective lens Lenses closest to the specimen which aides in
14.1 Scanning Objective magnification
(SO) - Shortest objective which magnifies the specimen up
14.2 Low Power to 4x
Objective (LPO) - Middle sized objective which magnifies the
14.3 High Power
specimen up to 10x
Objective (HPO)
- Longest sized objective which magnifies the
specimen up to 40x
Vertical post which supports the upper part of the
15. Pillar
microscope
16. Revolving Silver covering under the Dust shield which holds and
nosepiece rotates the objective lenses
17. Stage Flat surface where the slides are placed on
18. Stage clips Clip which hold the slides on place
Apply what you know: Identify the concept being defined in each of
the following number. Write your answers on the space provided
(PS: 4 pts)
______________1. – Part of the microscope which allows light to enter.
______________2. – Part of the microscope where the slides are placed on.
______________3. – Part of the microscope which magnifies the specimen up to
40x magnification.
______________4. – Part of the microscope which serves as the light source.
Essential Question: In 1 short sentence only, answer the question
below. (PS: 1 pt)
*Why do you think each part of the microscope is important?
