ACTIVITY TITLE : DEFINITION, HISTORY AND TYPES OF
MICROSCOPE
LEARNING TARGET/S : I can understand the definition,
history and types of Microscope.

Did you know that there is an estimated number of more or less five
million species of organisms on Earth? Some of them are microscopic or
too small to be seen. In studying those organisms, experts used tools like
microscope especially in observing its features and characteristics. The
question is “What is Microscope”?
Microscope is one of the most important tools used by biologists
(one who studies about living things). It is used to magnify or zoom very
small organisms or objects that cannot be seen by the naked eye.
Microscopes nowadays are very different from the old ones.
Below is a timeline of HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF MICROSCOPE
INVENTOR CONTRIBUTION / INVENTION
- Invented and reshape glasses in such a way that
one side of the glass is thin and the other is thick. They
ROMANS were surprised that when glasses where place against
an object, that object became bigger. This the first
single lens.
- Put several lenses in a tube and used them to
HANS and view an object. They were surprised when the object
ZACHARIAS became bigger compared to viewing it with only single
JANSSEN lens. Janssen made the first compound microscope.

- Created an almost similar model of the compound

*GALILEO microscope as he was driven by his curiosity to see
GALILEI distant objects (heavenly bodies). He was able to
create the spyglass or telescope.
- Grinded and polished lenses and finally created one
with great curvatures and with greater
magnification (270x-300x). He was the first man
ANTON VAN
to observe bacteria and protozoans which he
LEEUWENHOEK
called animalcules. He is regarded as the Father of
Microscopy for making a microscope with high
magnifying power during the early times.
ROBERT HOOKE - Crafted his crude microscope and was able to
observe little boxes from a thin slice of cork which he
called cells.
JOSEPH
- Improved the ability of compound microscope.
JACKSON LISTER
The development of microscope increased more around the middle of
19th century. Now, there are numerous types of microscope. Let’s just focus
on the most common types namely:
A. SIMPLE MICROSCOPE – composed of one lens and provides
relatively weaker magnifying power or 5x magnification
B. COMPOUND MICROSCOPE – composed of two or more lenses with
powerful magnification. There are two kinds of compound microscope
namely Compound Light Microscope (CLM) with 1,000x magnification
and Electron Microscope with 100,000x magnification.
