This book is designed for university students taking a first module in software
development or programming, followed by a second, more advanced module. This
book takes a unique approach of covering these topics using two popular pro-
gramming languages—Python and Java. Python is the vehicle for the teaching of
fundamental programming concepts that would align with the first introductory
programming module and Java as the vehicle for teaching more advanced pro-
gramming concepts that would align with the second more advanced module.
Design concepts are explained throughout using the UML notation. The topics are
taught from first principles and assume no prior knowledge of the subject.
The book is organized so as to support two twelve-week, one-semester modules,
which might typically comprise a two-hour lecture, a one-hour seminar and a one or
two-hour laboratory session. The outcomes at the start of each chapter highlights its
key learning objectives, the self-test questions at the end of each chapter (which
would be ideal as the basis for seminar sessions) ensure that the learning objectives
for that chapter have been met, while the programming exercises that follow (which
would be ideal for laboratory sessions) allow these learning objectives to be applied
to complete different programs. In addition to these exercises and questions, a case
study is developed in each semester to illustrate the use of the techniques covered in
the text to develop a non-trivial application. Lecturers who teach on modules that
run for fewer than twelve weeks in a semester could treat these case studies as a
self-directed student learning experience, rather than as taught topics.
The approach taken in this book is ideal for all students, including those entering
university with little or no background in the subject matter, perhaps coming from
pre-degree courses in other disciplines, or perhaps returning to study after long
periods away from formal education. It is the authors’ experience that such students
have enormous difficulties in grasping the fundamental programming concepts the
first-time round and therefore require a simpler and gentler introduction to the
subject than is presented in most standard texts.

The book takes an integrated approach to software development by covering

such topics as basic design principles and standards, testing methodologies and the
user interface, as well as looking at detailed implementation topics.
In the first semester, considerable time is spent concentrating on the fundamental
programming concepts such as declarations of variables and basic control struc-
tures, functions and collections, prior to introducing students to classes and objects,
inheritance, file handling, graphics and event-driven programming. Python is
chosen as the vehicle to teach these first semester topics as it is a programming
language very well suited to students who have had no prior programming expe-
rience. Instructions are also provided on how to download and use the Python
interpreter for writing and running Python programs.
Since Java is often found to be challenging programming language for students
completely new to programming Java is chosen instead as the vehicle to cover more
advanced second semester topics (such as, arrays, interfaces and lambda expres-
sions, exceptions, collection classes, advanced graphics using JavaFX and pack-
ages). A smooth transition is provided from Python to Java by revisiting some
fundamental concepts such as variables, control structures, file handling and classes
and objects in Java and highlighting differences and similarities between the two
languages.
The accompanying website contains all the code from the text book and
instructions for using some common development tools, while the book itself
includes an appendix that contains a guide to the various ways of writing and
running Java programs.

1.1 Introduction

Like any student starting out on a first programming module, you will be itching to
do just one thing—get started on your first program. We can well understand that,
and you won’t be disappointed, because you will be writing programs in this very
first chapter. Designing and writing computer programs—or coding, as its often
referred to nowadays—can be one of the most enjoyable and satisfying things you
can do, although it can seem a little daunting at first because it is like nothing else
you have ever done. But, with a bit of perseverance, you will not only start to get a
real taste for it, but you may well find yourself sitting up till two o’clock in the

morning trying to solve a problem. And just when you have given up and you are
dropping off to sleep, the answer pops into your head and you are at the computer
again until you notice it is getting light outside! So, if this is happening to you, then
don’t worry—it’s normal!
In this book we are going to cover two of the most popular programming
languages in current use—Python in this semester and Java in the second semester.
Both Python and Java are extremely popular programming languages, by whatever
metric you use. At the time of writing, they came first and second, respectively, in
the language tutorials most searched in Google (see Table 1.1). They both score at
or near the top of tables that record the skills needed for jobs in the industry, and
they are both used extensively for teaching programming skills at schools, colleges
and universities around the world.
This semester we will be using Python. The development of Python began in the
1980s. The first release—Python 1.0—was in 1994. Version 2.0 was released in
2000, and 2008 saw the release of version 3.0. Python has since then become an
extremely popular and widely used language. It is becoming more and more
popular in schools, colleges and universities as a first programming language,
mostly because of its simplicity and easy-to-read code. However, it is also very
widely used in industry, particularly in the fields of web development, artificial
intelligence and data science.
As we have said, it will not be long before you write your first program.
However, before you start writing programs we need to make sure that you
understand what we mean by important terms such as program, software, code and
programming languages.

1.2 Software

A computer is not very useful unless we give it some instructions that tell it what to
do. This set of instructions is called a program. Programs that the computer can use
can be stored on electronic chips that form part of the computer, can be stored on
devices like magnetic or solid-state disk drives, or on optical media such as CDs or
DVDs—and nowadays we often talk about “cloud” storage, which really just means
remote storage devices whose type and location are hidden from us.
The word software is the name given to a single program or a set of programs.
There are two main kinds of software:

• Application software. This is the name given to useful programs that a user
might need; for example, word processors, spreadsheets, accounts programs,
games and so on. Such programs are often referred to simply as applications or
apps.
• System software. This is the name given to special programs that help the
computer to do its job; for example, operating systems (such as UNIX™ or
Windows™, which help us to use the computer) and network software (which
helps computers to communicate with each other).

Of course, software is not restricted simply to computers themselves. Many of

today’s devices—from mobile phones to microwave ovens to games consoles—rely
on computer programs that are built into the device. Such software is referred to as
embedded software.

1.3 Programming

Both application software and system software are built by writing a set of
instructions for the computer to obey. Programming, or coding, is the task of
writing these instructions. These instructions have to be written in a language
specially designed for this purpose. These programming languages include C++,
Visual Basic, Python, Java and many more. In the first half of this book—the first
semester—we will be using Python. In the second semester we will be moving on
to Java.
Like most modern programming languages, both the Python language and the
Java language consist of instructions that look a bit like English. For example,
words such as while and if are part of both languages. Words that form part of
the language are referred to as keywords, and in this text we are going to write
keywords in bold fixed-width font so you can easily recognize them. The set of
instructions written in a programming language is called the program code or
source code.

Ultimately these instructions have to be translated into a language that can be

understood by the computer. The computer understands only binary instructions—
that means instructions written as a series of 0s and 1s. So, for example, the
machine might understand 01100111 to mean add. The language of the computer is
often referred to as machine code.
There are different ways in which program code can be converted into machine
code. In the case of languages such as C and C++, the whole thing is converted by
using a piece of software called a compiler; once the program has been successfully
compiled we end up with something we call an executable file, which can be run on
a computer. This is illustrated in Fig. 1.1.
It should be noted that because binary instructions are different for particular
computer operating systems (Windows™, macOS™, Unix™, etc.) an executable
file has to be compiled for a specific operating system. Because of this, languages
like Python and Java have been developed so that the compilation process is
slightly different to the above.

When we code in Python we use a special program called an interpreter. You
will see how to download and install that in the next section. When we run a Python
program, we normally do so in what is known as script mode. In this mode the
interpreter (which includes a compiler) translates our source code into special
instructions called byte code. Byte code, which, like machine code, consists of 0s

Along with the interpreter comes a special program called a virtual machine.
The job of the virtual machine is to translate each byte code instruction for the
computer it is running on, before the instruction is performed. This process is
known as interpretation. This is illustrated in Fig. 1.2.
As you will see later, in Python the source code is always saved in a file with
[Link] extension. The whole process of compiling and running the program is
completely seamless—the byte code is in fact automatically saved into a file (with
[Link] extension), but this takes place in the background.
Programming languages have a very strict set of rules that you must follow. Just
as with natural languages, this set of rules is called the syntax of the language.
Before a program can be compiled, or can be run with an interpreter, the program

must be free of errors. You will see when you start writing programs that the sort of
things that can cause such errors are the incorrect use of special Python keywords,
missing brackets and many others. When you try to run a Python program that has
syntax errors, the interpreter will help you correct them, as you will see in Sect. 1.5.
If, at a later stage, we wanted to deploy our programs to computers that weren’t
running the Python interpreter, there are some easy-to-use third-party tools such as
Pyinstaller™ that allow us to convert our programs to executable code for different
operating systems.
Python programs can also be run in what is known as interactive mode. This
mode provides a quick way of running lines of Python code without saving the code
first. You will see this in action in Sect. 1.5.

1.4 Downloading and Installing the Interpreter

So, the first thing we need to do is to download and install the correct Python
interpreter for our computer. Updated versions of Python appear regularly, and you
can get the latest version from here:

Follow the instructions given there for downloading the interpreter and installing
it on your machine.

1.5 Your First Program

As we have said, the normal way to write a program in Python is to create a file
containing the program code. However, as we told you above, Python can also be
run in interactive mode. The Python interpreter comes with a program called IDLE,
and it is possible simply to type instructions at the prompt without saving them.
You will probably realize immediately that this isn’t a sensible way to run a whole
program, as the instructions would have to be typed in each time. However, it is a
very useful way to test a few quick lines of code, and it is something you can try out
in future. And to demonstrate how this works, we will start off by running our first
program—which contains only one line of code—in this way.
Now, anyone who knows anything about programming will tell you that the first
program that you write in a new language has always got to be a program that
displays the words ‘Hello world’ on the screen; so we will stick with tradition, and
your first program will do exactly that!
Open your Python interpreter—you will see that the IDLE program appears
(Fig. 1.3).

The code for our first program is written out for you below—as you can see it
consists of just one line:

print('Hello world')

The print command is always the way we get text printed on the screen—we
will tell you a lot more about this in the next chapter. For now, just notice that
whatever we want to be printed is enclosed in single quotes.
Type the above code at the prompt, exactly as you see it, press Enter, and you
will see the words ‘Hello world’ displayed, as shown in Fig. 1.4.
As we have said, if we type commands like this at the prompt they can be run
straight away, but if we want to run them again we would have to retype them each
time. So, the normal way of doing things is to save the commands in a file once and
then run this file as many times as we like. To do that, choose File|New File from
the top menu bar of the IDLE program. You will be presented with a text editor into
which you can type your program. So, type the above single line of code, and save
your file, naming it [Link] (all Python scripts have the [Link]).
See Fig. 1.5.
Run the program by choosing Run|Run Module, or simply by pressing F5 in a
Windows™ environment, or (usually) Fn + F5 on a Mac™. The words ‘Hello
world’ will appear on the IDLE screen as before.2
In Sect. 1.3 we told you that the interpreter will help you to correct any syntax
errors that you make when you run the program. Try this out by leaving out the final
bracket after ‘Hello world’ and then running the program again. The position of the
error is highlighted, and a pop-up window appears telling you the nature of your
error (Fig. 1.6).
