B. Sc. Engineering Level-3 Term-I, Final Examination 2020

Subject: Civil Engineering

Paper : Environmental Engineering-I (CE-351)
Time : 2 hr. 30 min. Full Marks: 150

Answer any THREE questions from EACH section. Use separate script for EACH section.
The figures in the right margin indicate full marks.

SECTION-A
Q.1. (a) What are the objective of water supply system? What are the elements of water (13)
supply system?
(b) What do you understand by per capita water consumption? What are the factors (13)
affecting per capita water consumption?
(c) Explain the hydraulics of ground water flow into a well and deduce a (111/2)
mathematical expression for the yield of such well. Write about the
interference of well.

Q.2. (a) Mention the purposes of the water distribution system of a city. Explain the (91/2)
water transmission and distribution system at CUET campus.
(b) Briefly discuss the suitability of any particular water distribution network for (08)
Chattogram City.
(c) Calculate the flow in the following pipe network using Hardy Cross method. (20)

Q.3. (a) Explain fire hydrant and water hammer with figures. (10)
(b) Explain the importance of predicting population for the design of a water supply (121/2)
scheme in a city. How is the prediction of population made for a city and how it
utilizes?
(c) It is required to supply 120000 L/day. The table given below is the soil quality. (15)
Find the slot No. pipe size:

SECTION-B

Q.4. (a) Write down the objectives of water purification. Name the methods of water (10)
purification indicating their specific application.

(b) Show that the efficiency of a settling tank is dependent on surface area, not depth (19)
of tank. Calculate the dimension of a rectangular settling tank to treat 100m3 of
water per hour when the overflow rate is 0.75m/hr and the detention time is
2 hours.

(c) What do you mean by WHO guideline value and national standard value of (81/2)
water for drinking purpose? Explain with appropriate example.

Q.5. (a) Write down the theory of coagulation. State the factors influencing coagulation. (121/2)

(b) Distinguish between color and turbidity. Write down their sanitary significance. (10)

(c) After analysis of a water sample following concentration of (15)

8, 50 ppm respectively. Calculate total hardness and alkalinity of the sample.

Q.6. (a) Write short notes on (i) Coagulation flocculation, (ii) Indicator organism, (12)
(iii) Break point chlorination, (iv) Softening.

(b) A water sample from Halda river has been analyzed and the obtained results are (251/2)
shown below. Compare the quality of the water to the Bangladesh drinking
water quality standards and draw a qualitative flow diagram of a treatment
system of the water if needed. Also justify your selection of treatment options.
