Project Management - PERT & CPM

Solutions
Problems 1 and 2

1. Network Diagram (AON)

2. Project Completion Time and Critical Path

Path Analysis:

Path 1: A -> B -> C -> E -> G = 3 + 4 + 2 + 4 + 2 = 15 weeks

Path 2: A -> B -> D -> F -> G = 3 + 4 + 5 + 3 + 2 = 17 weeks

(a) Project Completion Time: 17 weeks (Maximum path duration).

(b) Critical Path: A -> B -> D -> F -> G.

Problem 3: Jack's Floating Banana Party Company

(a) Network Diagram

(b) & (c) Critical Path and Expected Length

Path Analysis:

Path 1: A -> C -> E = 6 + 3 + 6 = 15 weeks

Path 2: B -> D -> E = 5 + 3 + 6 = 14 weeks

Path 3: B -> D -> F = 5 + 3 + 9 = 17 weeks

(b) Critical Path: B -> D -> F.

(c) Expected Project Length: 17 weeks.

Problems 4 through 8

4. Network Diagram (AON)

5 & 6. Expected Time and Variance for Each Activity

Formulas:

Expected time (te) = (a + 4m + b) / 6

Variance (Var) = ((b - a) / 6)^2

Activity Opt (a) Most Likely Pess (b) Exp Time Variance
(m) (te)
A 3 6 9 6.000 1.000
B 3 5 7 5.000 0.444
C 4 7 12 7.333 1.778
D 4 8 10 7.667 1.000
E 5 10 16 10.167 3.361
F 3 4 5 4.000 0.111
G 3 6 8 5.833 0.694
H 5 6 10 6.500 0.694
I 5 8 11 8.000 1.000
J 3 3 3 3.000 0.000

7. Project Completion Time and Critical Path

Path Analysis using Expected Times (te):

Path 1: A -> B -> D -> F -> H -> J = 6 + 5 + 7.667 + 4 + 6.5 + 3 = 32.167 weeks
Path 2: A -> B -> D -> G -> I -> J = 6 + 5 + 7.667 + 5.833 + 8 + 3 = 35.500 weeks

Path 3: A -> C -> E -> F -> H -> J = 6 + 7.333 + 10.167 + 4 + 6.5 + 3 = 37.000 weeks

Path 4: A -> C -> E -> G -> I -> J = 6 + 7.333 + 10.167 + 5.833 + 8 + 3 = 40.333 weeks

(a) Project Completion Time: 40.33 weeks (exactly 121/3 weeks).

(b) Critical Path: A -> C -> E -> G -> I -> J.

8. Project Completion Probabilities

Var(CP) = Var(A) + Var(C) + Var(E) + Var(G) + Var(I) + Var(J)

Var(CP) = 1.000 + 1.778 + 3.361 + 0.694 + 1.000 + 0.000 = 7.833 (47/6)

Project Standard Deviation (σ) = √7.833 = 2.7988 weeks

(a) Probability <= 38 weeks:

Z = (38 - 40.333) / 2.7988 = -0.8337

Probability = 0.2022 or 20.22%

(b) Probability <= 42 weeks:

Z = (42 - 40.333) / 2.7988 = 0.5955

Probability = 0.7242 or 72.42%
