Prerequisites
This course is ONLY for [Link]. and Dual Degree students. The “soft” prerequisites for this
course are EE229 and EE325. While not mandatory, it is highly recommended that you cover
the material in those courses before attending this course.
Curriculum
• Quick review of signals and systems, Fourier transform, and random processes
• Low-pass representation of bandpass signals and systems: downconversion and upconver
sion, lowpass representation of bandpass systems
• Analog modulation techniques: Amplitude modulation, DSB, SSB, VSB modulations, An
gle modulation: FM and PM
• Sampling, quantization and pulse modulation: Sampling and pulse amplitude modulation,
PCM and DPCM, Delta modulation, scalar and vector quantization
• Digital modulation techniques: Basics of PSK, ASK, FSK, QAM; ML demodulator imple
mentation with matched filter, decision regions and probability of error analysis
• Digital communication over bandlimited channels: Intersymbol interference, Nyquist cri
terion for ISI-free pulse, raised cosine pulse, ML sequence detection for bandlimited chan
nels.
1
• Overview of multiplexing and multiple access techniques: TDM(A), CDMA, FDM and
OFDM(A)
• Optional topics: Hardware / Software Radio demos, PLL and Synchronization
Textbook
The course is intended to be self-contained, but the reference textbooks that are recommended
are:
1. U. Madhow, “Introduction to Communications Systems”, Cambridge 2014. (both analog
and digital communication)
2. Haykin and Moher, “Communication Systems” 5th edition (analog communication)
3. B. P. Lathi, “Modern Digital and Analog Communication Systems” 3rd edition (analog
communication)
4. “Principles of communication engineering” – Wozencraft and Jacobs (digital communi
cation)
5. “Digital Communication” – Proakis (digital communication)
6. “Fundamentals of Digital Communication” – U. Madhow (digital communication)
Attendance Policy
Attendance is compulsory. DX will be awarded for students with less than 80% attendance.
Evaluation
Homework assignments will be assigned, once every two weeks and will NOT be evaluated.
Some problems will be discussed either in class or by the teaching assistant in a separate tutorial
session.
There will be TWO in-class quizzes of 45 minutes duration on the following dates:
• August 17th
• October 12th
The evaluation will follow the following pattern:
1. Homeworks: 0%
2. Quizzes: 25%
3. Mid-semester: 35%
2
4. End-semester: 40%
5. Audit policy: A pass will be awarded for grade CC or equivalent. Audit students must
attend classes and attempt homeworks as regular. The “pass” criterion is a CC grade.
Please note that quizzes and exams would often contain homework problems with minimal
modifications.
Class Policy
• No mobile phone / laptop usage
Office Hours
Office hours: You can meet the instructor immediately after class for doubt clearing or schedule
a session when the class ends, or via e-mail.
