Those words, echoed riveting throughout my head, calling me to change
my mind. Ironic how it was, those very words haunting me every night
since I had started searching, were from the very mouth of who’s secrets
had ruined my life. Cautiously, I examined the decaying packaging, the
faded notes of our early encounter. Memories which had so vividly been
lived through but were never really mine.
Those same words, scribbled in fainted lettering sprawled across its
wrapper warning me not to continue, yet I persisted. Then I saw it, a ring
identical to the one which lay forgotten under layers of false promises.
Suddenly I was back in our old home, our old place of reprise, when
everything was good. Sure life wasn’t easy, work, school, commitments,
yet the world kept moving. Back then life was easy, full of the wonders of
youth, yet a deep storm was brewing under my feet, one that I could
never dream of. Then came the baby, life could not have been better.
Then he was gone. A rotting husk at my doorstep a few days later after he
left. The world grew dim as the walls of this forgotten cell grew closer and
closer, threatening to consume me.
I had to continue; I had to know what else was hidden. Further in the
package, a badge stood, plaques and medals tumbled out. Detailing a life
no one could dream of. then came files upon files. In it lay meticulous
plans, each chance encounter, not so improbable. Each action, a strategic
play. His life was a lie. My life was a lie, here I thought life wasn’t as it had
seemed. Yet it turned out nothing was real, just a drawn-out ruse for some
now gone girl.
But then I spotted it, pinned within the badge, a note. The same scribbled
writing lay across. The very words, emblazoned across the initial
packaging, and my mind. Yet beneath a message lay, pleading and full of
remorse.
Our lives had not been perfect, but I was too busy to see that. I was
selfish, greedy, and mean.
